Harpenden 5XI v St Albans Cricket Club 5XI old on Sat 15 Aug 2015 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report This game went down to the final over and the loss came with only 4 balls to spare against a very decent Harpenden 5's.

Batting first on a soggy wicket St Albans opened with two veterans, Naveed Ahmed and Marcus Townend, two of the most contrasting technicians you could ever hope to see. This was thrown into sharp relief by the fact that Naveed celebrated his fifty when Marcus, struggling with a tweaked hamstring, had scored only one run in the partnership. And it was a partnership that put on over a hundred before a crazy mix up and terrible calling led to Naveed being run out for a splendid 77 when his first century for the club was surely looming...the rest of the St Albans batting was nothing to write home about and apart from Ed Burrowes and Eamonn Goodfellow who both chipped in with a dozen apiece no-one else reached double figures... Jon Little , for one, is still shaking his head about getting himself caught off a dead slow, loopy full toss.

The opening St Albans bowlers, Harry Saunders and Jon Little , set about about strangling the Harpenden openers but found wickets hard to come by. Tight, economical bowling was the order of the day against experienced batsmen who blocked and left a lot of the early exchanges.

First change bowlers Ed Burrowes and Naveed Ahmed continued the frugal bowling and it was Ed who made the breakthrough dismissing both openers early in his first spell. Naveed contributed a wicket and into the attack came the teams youngsters Ollie Mulvaney, Nick Ralf and Matt Hook . All bowled with maturity against decent, adult batsmen and it was Matt , playing in his first senior game, who bowled the oppositions number 5 batsman just as he was getting into his stride. Matt's bowling figures of 4-0-9-1 mark him out as one to watch .....

We bowled well, fielded well but the opposition had more depth to their batting and although none of their batsman reached the heights of our own Naveed's performance they were more consistent and reached their with target in the last over.

Credit to Harry Saunders who bowled a wicket maiden in the penultimate over when only one run was required to win but in the end it was a scrambled single in the last over that won it and put the seal on a highly competitive and enjoyable game of cricket that demonstrated that the 5XI is continuing to develop into a credible side for the club.
