St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Old Elizabethans II on Sat 23 Jul 2016 at 13:00
Match was Drawn

Match report St Albans IIIs had much the better of this encounter from start to finish, but had to settle for a draw against Old Elizabethans.

Summer had arrived during the week and the wicket looked dry and hard, ideal for batting. Telkman had no hesitation in choosing to bat first. The openers showed their gratitude by swiftly getting on top of the bowling, Karunanayake continuing his good form (38), and West offering some lovely timing through the V to hit 46. Crisp was able to follow in the same vein (39), and Shah and Khan added a further half century partnership, Shah mixing power with poise to notch his first 50 for the club. In the knowledge that the opposition had a knack of chasing down big totals, the full 53 overs were used, Thomas's final ball 6 taking the total to 240. The OE bowlers and fieldsmen had offered their best under the sun.

After that well balanced innings, it was now over to the bowlers. Andy Milnes, making his SLCG debut, swung two through the gate and OE's were in some early trouble. Some sense of recovery was offered by Godfrey and Parkar, but Hicks entered the fray and induced some mistakes to take three wickets (3/18); there could only be one winner from this point. When Telkman took a wicket in his first over, the score was 76-8 after 31 overs - 16 overs remained to take two final wickets. However a fine rearguard response saw Jones and Raz settle in to their task, and try as they might, the bowlers could not prise them apart, the wicket not offering a grain of help.

So Saints had to settle for a draw, taking 18 bonus points to five. As always such a result raised a few questions in hindsight: should there have been a declaration? What if a couple of chances had been held? But with such a fine all-round team performance, regrets should be cast aside.

OEs, second on the ladder, did not have their best line-up out, but Saints have closed the gap on them, and with the third match in a trio of games against first-second-third to come, against Pirton, there is plenty to look forward to.
