Pirton I v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 30 Jul 2016 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 91 runs
Match report
After much debate over transport arrangements, resolved when Watkins Sr stepped in to provide the extra driver (thank you!), the IIIs travelled to Pirton with a strong line-up, seeking to continue recent progress.
Telkman, skipper for the day, won the toss and asked Watkins Jr and Eames to get things under way. Eames somehow miscued a full toss - often a wicket taking delivery in Division 8A - but Watkins looked comfortable in compiling 35 before being adjudged caught behind. The home side’s fielding had been looking a little suspect, but Crisp fell to a fine running catch, and Saints were left at 80-4 after 21 overs.
This brought together Shah and Khan in similar circumstances to the week before, and they were able to provide an encore to the previous week’s partnership; remaining patient whilst dispatching the loose balls that arrived often enough to keep the run rate moving along nicely. Shah contributed 65 with 11 boundaries in a partnership of 73. Dean arrived at the crease and was immediately able to find some momentum in a swift 26. There had been some debate about a declaration, but with the tally climbing above 200, some thoughtless batting and an inexplicable run out decision removed that option, with an all out total of 216 arrived at in the 51st over, Khan last man out for an invaluable 46 that had held the innings together. Pirton’s Laskowski finished with five wickets, decent reward for some good work at the top of the order.
Tea was taken with a harsh but fair assessment of the feeble batting efforts at the end ringing in the ears, and Saints were left pondering whether the advantage was with the locals.
If that was the case, it was only briefly. Dean had the new ball, and with the first delivery of the innings Howard took a few steps down the wicket to attack, but only succeeded in snicking through to Crisp who calmly accepted the catch. This brought about great merriment, for not only was this the earliest of early breakthroughs, it was achieved in the knowledge that Howard was Pirton’s star man, having amassed many runs over the course of the season.
There were of course still nine wickets to take, and with an undercurrent of ill feeling in the air it was important to remain focussed. A run out yielded the next victim, and then the toiling Everdell rolled over two in one over, caught at first and third slips - reward not just for the bowler but also the captain’s positive field placements. Veteran Andrew (68 years, 51 runs) brought some much missed Caribbean flair to the innings, recalling West Indian moments of old with his cutting and driving. However Walker was able to curl one past his charging bat to rattle the stumps. Saints were now in a position of strength, but keen to avoid the disappointment of last week’s draw. For this, Watkins came to the fore, generating good pace which yielded the vital wickets that finished off the tail to take Saints' bowling honours for the day with 3/19.
So, thirty well deserved points were in the bag, again the result of a team effort. As results came in from around the League, this lifted Saints to fourth on the ladder, 15 points from the promotion spots. Even better was returning to Clarence Park on an afternoon when all four St Albans teams had secured victory, the first occasion since 2008. Let’s keep that winning feeling going.
