Parkfield & Headstone II v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 15 Jul 2017 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report An underwhelming batting performance against top of the league Parkfield and Headstone which saw Saints post only 111 runs was the primary reason for a disappointing loss.

Batting first in damp and drizzly conditions on P&H’s undulating pitch, Saint’s stronger than usual line up made a poor start when Faz Nisar flashed at a wide ball and nicked off in the first over. He was followed soon after by his brother Manny who was also caught behind, though from a better ball. Two down with only 7 runs on the board was not the start we hoped for.

Najib Khan made a good looking 14 in partnership with Michael Martin who bashed 17 before both departed, followed shortly afterwards by Nick Ralfe who never really got going. Jim Everdell steadied the sinking ship with a typically pugnacious 36 before being well caught on the boundary to his visible annoyance. Kevin Ralfe misjudged the flight of one and was stumped on 4 before Nadeem Arif, playing his first league game of the season, managed to score 24 classy runs before he too was sent back to the pavilion.

Bowlers Andy Saunders, Craig Roseman and the not out Sammy Kumar only added a paltry 5 runs between them before the innings closed on the aforementioned Nelson. The opposition bowling was good but not spectacular and a few of the Saints batsmen will be reflecting on their decision making and lack of patience I’m sure.

It was never going to be enough against such strong opposition but credit to the Saints bowlers and fielders who made them earn every run. A tidy opening spell from Everdell and Arif, including a wicket for Everdell (the first of two for him) , set the standard with Saunders coming on first change and tying down an end and Roseman also keeping things tight. Another two wickets went down when Sammy Kumar’s leg spin was introduced and Michael Martin, Faz Nisar and Nick Ralfe all bowled well to no avail as the Saints total was surpassed with 6 and a bit overs to spare.

A couple of dropped catches in the slips didn’t help matters but equally mention should go to a couple of excellent catches from Faz Nisar and Michael Martin.

Disappointing then but some positives to be taken from the game and the indications are that there are better days ahead for this team.
