Match report St Albans skipper Andy Saunders lost his fifth toss in a row and the opposition opted to bat on a damp’ish but drying Clarence Park wicket. Tight spells from opening pair Hassan Salahin and Moksudul Islam demonstrated the difficulty of getting runs, the ball slow to come onto the bat. Despite their energy no wickets were forthcoming as the batsmen set their stalls out to block their way through the early overs. Amit Rajani came into the attack, bamboozling the batsmen with his wobbly medium pace, with Altaf Hussain at the other end providing accurate, seaming support. Still the batsman blocked, the run rate crawling along at 2 an over. Both bowlers made breakthroughs and 3 wickets went down in quick succession, 1 to Hussain and 2 to Rajani, bringing fresh batsmen to the crease. Andy Saunders came to the crease and took a wicket with his first ball and he and spinner Abdul Hasseb kept the run rate low. With no option but to accelerate the batsmen starting taking risks and they started to pay off and eventually they reached a total of 148 off their 40 overs helped along by some generous St Albans fielding and 37 extras ... it still felt like a low total.

Saints opening batsman George Gemmill got a sharp ball in the first over and went caught behind. His opening partner Stuart Murray started quickly but reached for a wide one and departed on 12. Amit Rajani and Steve Ferguson steadied the ship with the latter playing a mature innings which saw him top score with 37. Support came in the shape of Harry Saunders who played sensibly for a number of overs and then when told to accelerate cut loose and bashed out a useful 21 . St Albans were well behind the run rate as they approached the latter part of their innings but a quickfire 18 from Abdul Haseeb and a dozen from the ever reliable Andy Loe bought the target within range. After Hasseb was bowled it was up to Andy Loe and Andy Saunders to see out the final overs. Saunders ran out Loe in the final over , must to the latters annoyance, but made amends with a swept four with 3 balls remaining to seal the victory
