St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v West Herts III on Sat 07 Aug 2004 at
St Albans Cricket Club Won St Albans win by 5 wickets
Match report
Skipper, Jerry Fretter, again won the toss, and on a hot day, asked the opposition to bat. After last weeks first class effort in the field, another was expected. However, Zaman and James could not find the right line, and despite some difficult chances in the slips, runs were flowing at a quck rate. Zaman eventually made the break when he bowled May (20).
Some good fielding from Marriott (MAN OF THE MATCH) saw him pull off two quick run outs.
James was replaced by O'Donnell, who looked a little rusty in his first couple of overs, missing a simple caught and bowled chance. Straw dropped another easy chance and it appeared that St Albans were letting the game slip. Nosly (63) did some slogging across the line and was also dropped by James in the deep. However, one shot too many proved his downfall, as he was caught by Marriott. O'Donnell found his line and length and was rewarded with another wicket when he bowled Feeton(23).
Tim Fretter, fresh from his 4-0 last week, bowled too short, and was despatched for big 6. He gained revenge shortly afterwards, when he found an edge, which was caught by skipper and Dad, Jerry Fretter behind the stumps.
In introduction of Marriott brought instant rewards as he bowled Chourdy (15) and then saw James take an easy catch.
West Herts finished on 203-9 from 53 overs.
After a tremendous tea, the best yet this season (thanks Amanda), St Albans set off on the task of win/lose, there was to be no draw.
Tim Fretter hit his first ball for 6 and followed that with another mighty blow of, at least 80 yards, over the sightscreens. St Albans were racing ahead, with 40 on the board when Tim Fretter mis hit the ball to mid-off and found the shortest fielder.
Rex Devadason soon perished, when he pulled the ball onto his stumps. Pat Sylvester plodded along, until he hit the ball in the air and was caught. St Albans were 70-3 from 20 overs and getting behind the rate.
Simon Marriott and Max Brown set about increasing the run rate. Despite some good bowling from Wallace, who was removed from the attack when he was bowling well, Marriott and Brown started to find the boundary. The pair advanced the score to 141 in the 36 over, when Brown missed a straight one and was clean bowled. Nisar strode to the wicket and after a quick 13 runs in just 2 overs, was cleaned bolwed, as he heaved across the line. Enter another hitter, in the form of Uzman Zaman, who blasted, edged and drove the ball to most of the parts of the field, thankfully to those spaces without fielders.
One over from the returning Wallace saw Uzman hit 17, including a big 6 (thnksfully the trees stopped it going out the ground!!). This one over had pulled St Albans run rate to easy figures.
St Albans won when Zaman hit the ball to the boundary and should have been caught, only to see the fielder drop the catch, which ran over the bounday for a fine win.
Skipper Jerry Fretter was delighted with the win, as they now leap-frog West Herts in the table. He was most pleased with the batting performance, adding " Had we batted like that against 2-3 other teams, we would now be up in line for promotion. All we now need to do is a have good fielding session and a good batting session, in the same match!"
Next week, the 4th XI travel to bottom of the table, Broxbourne, hopefully with the same side.
