St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 16 runs

Match report The Club X1 played Lankians at the Sandpit Lane astro and the team featured several colts and the more mature captains of Dave Ashton and Tim Winfield. After a late start the toss was won and the Lankians put into bat.

After a tight opening spell from Adam Coulson (2-16) and Andrew Melling (0-10), the bowling was rotated to allow all the players an opportunity to bowl. After the first couple of wickets fell the Lankians got into their stride and a large partnership from the opening batsman (52) and captain (37) took the guests into the 90's for 2 wickets. The introduction of Tim Winfield (2-25) slowed the rate and removed the established pair, one with a great catch from George Pelham. From then on runs came steadily but wickets also fell regularly as the Lankians finished on 193, though this should have been less as wides were very harshly given.

All the Colts all bowled well, with Oscar Reeves, George Pelham, Sammy Kumar and Zac Tarrant bowling 17 overs between them. Highlight of the bowling was Zac's smile as he took his first ever senior wicket. Special mention to Marcus Cunnington who arrived off a plane on Saturday morning from the Dominican Republic to then keep wicket very well after only a few hours sleep. Special 'Saunders Award' candidate to Tim Winfield - caught and bowled opportunity - confidently called for the skyer, cleared other fielders to run under it and then spilled it.

With a large total to chase Huzefa (18) and Adam (23) quickly built a solid opening. The Lankians change of bowling to leg spin brought about a regular fall of wickets. However Cunnington batting at 3 played very sensibly, defending the good bowls and dispatching anything loose to finish on 44, his highest score for St Albans. All the Colts batted with great technique and Zac and Sammy (20 n.o.) providing a fine flourish at the end, with the Club X1 falling just 20 runs short of the 194 needed.

A competitive game, with the Club XI showing the strength and skills in several of the younger members of the club (and a few of the older ones did all right). Man of the match performance to Marcus Cunnington for his commitment to play, keeping well and then achieving his highest club score.
