Match report St Albans fielded a team of 10 colts and the somewhat older captain for the day Tim Winfield. Winning the toss on a warm glorious sunny day, St Albans opted to field and hopefully benefit from previous experience of the astro wicket.
Opening the bowling for St Albans was Hashim Awan and Sammy Kumar. Hashim used his strength to great effect with hostile bowling keeping the batsmen on their toes and taking 2-16 of the first 5 overs. Sammy was a fine complement with his tricky spin and finishing with 0-21 off 5 overs. Lorna Harper bowled with great flight and took 1-16 off 5 overs, Zac Tarrant continued his success from the previous week taking 2-13, Jamie Church bowled 4 overs in his first ever senior game and took a wicket off his final ball to finish with 1-20. Tim Winfield was miserly with 0-3 of his 5 overs, Sachin Patel taking 2 wickets and the innings was wrapped up in style with Wilf Rush taking 2 wickets and Sammy taking a one-handed slip catch, diving at full length. Marcus continues to impress with his keeping, stopping anything wayward and taking a very smart stumping. An excellent performance to have Oakfield 131 all out and all 9 bowlers making a contribution.
Wilf and Sachin opened the batting, facing some lively bowling but both punished anything loose with 4's and accelerated the scoring. The Oakfield bowling was generally pacey and after the loss of the opening pair, further wickets fell regularly with the Marcus Cunnington and Emily Pollard also out to some good bowling. At 42 for 4, skipper Tim and Sammy needed to steady the situation and set about a careful approach to only play balls as needed. Slowly the scoring built and Tim providing a mixture of lusty blows, fine cuts over the slips and evading a couple of hard caught chances, whilst Sammy was steady, taking singles and rotating the strike. By the time Tim (60) and Sammy (13) were both out the score had progressed to 122, leaving only 10 for victory. The winning runs were achieved in style as Sam Mistry crashed a 4 and hit the winning runs with a reverse sweep.
A great win and recognition of the fine talent that exists in the St Albans Colts, with a little help from the team elder for the day! Club XI win by 4 wickets
