St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Wheathampstead II on Sat 09 Jun 2018 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report At the sixth time of asking, the IIIs finally came good to register a redemptive win, over Wheathampstead IIs.

With Verulam School’s fixtures playing havoc with pitch preparation, the advice from curator Caley was to bowl first. Winning the toss gave Walker the opportunity to do just that.

Opening up, Scott found some life in the opening overs with the ball hopping around a little while Baylis, welcomed back to the lineup, bowled with good pace. The introduction of Winfield (Sr.) yielded success as he bowled ten overs straight for the fine figures of 3/30, his first wicket a brilliant return catch taken inches from the ground.

At the other end, Price had once again picked up a wicket with her first delivery, well caught by Melling, an almost carbon copy of action from the week before. The middle overs saw Wheato draw back into their shells a little. Captain Li played a good hand before falling to Moksy, after which the hard hitting Akram took over, powering Wheathampstead on beyond a 200 run total. Baylis pitched in with some perfect straight deliveries, and Price collected her second of the afternoon.

Wickets had continued to fall through the afternoon, and the bowling unit worked hard without much fortune, but somehow the visitors had accumulated a 200+ run total and so Saints felt a little ragged as they retreated for the tea break. With a season’s high score no better than 129, Saints knew they would have to exceed expectations to reach a target of 210 - would this new line-up gel better?

Ferguson got things moving with some superb cover drives, but fell in the sixth over, bringing Scott to the crease. Almost immediately he started striking the ball well, and the fielding positions were set more defensively. Saints’ progression was aided by the unusual bonus of a 5 run penalty when the ball hit a helmet, positioned behind a fumbling keeper. Good running and some well struck shots quickly saw the run rate climb beyond five an over, with Walker - unusually placed as opener - also playing his part. The score had reached 92 when Walker perished for 31, and a good deal of confidence had been restored.

Melling played a cameo, but by now Scott had taken over in his swashbuckling fashion, looking to score off every ball. More calmly Rich Baylis (28no) found the gaps, his singles giving the strike to Scott. It became a charge towards victory for the rampant Scott, but somehow he fluffed his lines when he was bowled for 98. A century would have been a deserved result, but Harvey took the dismissal in his stride, comfortable in the knowledge that his innings had taken his team to the brink of victory - one which duly followed a few overs later.

And so Saints took the win and 30 points, with an undoubted sense of relief. With many contributions, this was an excellent team effort, but the plaudits go to man of the match Scott. Next up, a visit to Ware - the IIIs will hope to build on this winning momentum.
