St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Langleybury III on Sat 14 Jul 2018 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 16 runs
Match report
After another week of warm, sunny days, Saints IIIs arrived at Sandpit Lane Playing Fields to discover a dry outfield surrounding an oasis of green, the centre wicket area well looked after through the week.
In a vital game for Saints, facing bottom of the table opposition in Langleybury, the skipper lost the toss and was asked to field first. The changing room faces included a few appearing in the IIIs for the first time in 2018, and the XI looked strong.
Charlie Smith, one of those new faces, grabbed an early brace of wickets with a good spell opening up. As often happens in 50 over matches, the visitors then settled in for a period of consolidation, with Winfield’s metronomic bowling keeping the runs at bay, his nine overs going for just 16. However both Roe and Beasley departed in quick succession, the latter’s downfall the result of a great piece of work at the stumps by keeper Cunnington, cleaning up an awful throw to complete a run out.
A further recovery from the Langleybury, who were finding useful contributions from their batsmen, kept the scoreboard moving along, even as wickets fell. For a period here Saints somewhat lost their way in the field, a few shots eluding fieldsman and bringing extra runs, while the skipper was distracted by the “tea fiasco”, making late arrangements for the delivery of the luncheon. Telkman took two late wickets, and Smith returned to add two more to his tally to finish with the fine figures of 4/36.
Langleybury’s total of 178 was simultaneously somewhat below par and more than they should have scored as Saints had been unable to finish them off. With Saints misfiring batting lineup, there was uncertainty in the camp.
A stunning first over yielded an unlikely 15 overs, but within the blink of an eye Saints had lost both openers to be 2/20. Naveed and Wyldes joined forces, with the latter looking fluent in piling up the runs with some well struck boundaries. After adding 54, Wyldes (40) was bowled by the newly introduced Crawley, with a big turning delivery. The surface had certainly dried up and was tending to stay low, though without the uneven bounce often seen at Sandpit Lane.
Saints third wicket had fallen with the total on 74, exactly as had that of the visitors, with runs coming at twice Langleybury’s rate. Could the IIIs finish that little bit better? It was now over to Naveed and Moksudul to take things forward, but Naveed was out shortly after for a diligent 21. Moksy played with his usual verve, living somewhat dangerously, and perished for 24, so handing the reins over to West with the score on 5/121 - fewer than 60 required. Run scoring was now more challenging but the run rate was never threatening and so Saints remained in it - if only they could stop losing wickets. Unfortunately West was bowled on 23 - the ball keeping a little low - and a disappointing conclusion followed as the tailenders (reflecting here on their position in the batting order, not their ability) could not accumulate the necessary runs to get Saints over the line, falling 16 runs short.
This was an unquestionably poor outing for a strong team against a weaker opposition, representing a missed opportunity to escape from a hotly contested relegation battle. Saints will still be rueing their inability to win at home when they next travel to Flitwick.
