Match report A beautiful day at the picturesque Maccabi Vale Sports Ground in Arkley to start the season saw the 4XI field a ten person team to start the league season. Skipper Andy Saunders lost the toss (a good omen) and was put into the bat on a drying wicket that could have done with a few days of heavy rolling. The Nisar brothers, Manny and Faz, opened for Saints and started well with some obdurate batting that saw the scoreboard ticking over at a steady three an over. As is usual this early in the season the outfield grass was long and there was no value in shots along the ground, fours coming along as regularly as a Thameslink train , and it was frustrating to see Manny's powerful cover drives and cut shots trundling along along and stopping well short of the boundary. Faz batted with concentration in a support role to his more attacking sibling but after surviving a number of close calls departed caught behind for 8, bringing Michael 'Eammo' Eames to the crease who received a fine yorker from the impressive Prabhu , which saw him depart for a duck. Young Josh Mulvaney also came and went without scoring after being adjudged caught behind and from there on in the innings was forgettable with only last man Ciaran Walsh pummelling 10 run to give his team mates something to cheer as the innings ended with St Albans 75 all out. Manny's 27 in difficult batting conditions with minimal support was noteworthy and deserves a mention in despatches. After a disappointing tea , perhaps the worst I've had in recent years, the T&M innings was perfunctory and they reached their target in just 21 overs . Some decent bowling by Lorna Harper, Ciaran Walsh and Josh Mulvaney slowed their progress but Saunders got the only wicket to fall and in all honesty is was a procession for their veteran batsmen who never really looked in trouble . The first game of the season is always a chance to shake off some rust and get back into the groove - its a long summer with plenty of cricket ahead and there will better days ahead for all involved ....
