St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Watford Town IV on Sat 12 May 2018 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report After the bucolic first weekend of the season reality bit hard as a double jumper day beckoned. Dark skies over Sandpit Lane Cricket Ground (SLCG) were an ominous portent of the damp day to come.

Skipper Andy Saunders lost his 2nd toss in as many weeks and was put into bat. The Nisar brothers opened for Saints and while looking initially comfortable struggled to get value for their shots on an outfield that had not been cut, the long grass and abundant daisies ensuring that nailed on boundaries became singles.

Rain breaks meant that any rhythm was hard to establish and first Faz and then Manny let frustration get the better of them, lofting loose shots to fielders in an effort to accelerate the tortuously slow run rate.

Peter Church tried hard to intimidate the bowlers with some lusty blows until he was clean bowled while the experienced Najib Khan only added single figures before our two young guns James Church and Josh Mulvaney came and went without scoring and the potentially explosive Glenn O’Grady followed suit.

Jon Little was able to smash a quick 17, including a huge six into the spectators that almost killed Manny, before being disappointingly run out, and the innings fizzled out with only 79 runs scored.

At least that’s 4 more than last week I suppose.

Tea was postponed until the end of play in favour of keeping the game going while the rain was light with Jon Little and Glenn O’Grady opening the bowling for Saints. O’Grady’s surprising pace off his short run kept the run rate manageable and Little’s accurate medium pace was frugal. Of the two only Little managed to snag a wicket, clean bowling the opposition opener, while recording excellent figures of 8-2-13-1.

Andy Saunders came in first change and picked up 3 quick wickets, all clean bowled, in a 6 over spell with Josh Mulvaney adding another and James Church bowling impressively but once again there weren’t enough runs on the board and it was only a matter of time before the low total was overhauled.

As conditions improve we can only hope the batting will become more consistent and the runs will flow once again.
