St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Old Haberdashers 2XI on Sat 30 Jun 2018 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 31 runs

Match report St Albans won the toss and put Old Habs into bat hoping to exploit the early movement and variable bounce from the pitch. Ciaran bowled well without reward and Steven Steinmetz picked up the first wicket with a straight ball that kept low. OH were looking untroubled at 47-1 after 9 overs. Alfie Button, playing in his first game of the season, bowled with good aggression, extracting some false shots from the batsmen and picked up 2 quick wickets, including a great diving catch from Peter Melling. Najib Khan bowled tight lines and length and was unlucky when the dangerous 1s player was dropped early in his innings. David Hancock was welcomed back to the club after a long absence by taking on the challenge of bowling a full 8 over spell. Faz Nisar also bowled well, but with Manzoor well set and the pitch flattening, both went unrewarded for their fine spells. With Jacobs also well settled the last 10 overs of the innings went for 103 runs, and a total of 233, which given the good pitch and fast outfield may have been slightly below par.
Thanks also to Marcus Cunnington who was clinical behind the stumps, putting his body on the line numerous times.

With a strong batting line up St Albans felt confident about chasing down the target, and Peter Melling (18) and Manny Nisar (35) built a solid foundation putting on 35 together after 9 overs. Peter falling to a fast in swinging yorker from OH’s opening bowler (yet another OH 1s player!). Najib Khan (59) came to the crease full of confidence after his 92 from the previous week and carried on where he left off, putting away the bad balls, and pushing quick singles, and turning 1s into 2s. At the half way point St Albans were well set at 121-1, and the chirpy Manzoor was finally silenced for the first time in the game.
Sadly Manzoor came to life again as a mini collapse of 4 wickets in 5 balls saw the momentum quickly swing back to OH. Nadeem Arif (33), and Steven Steinmetz (16) stopped the rot with a good partnership to rebuild the chase, and with only 50 needed from the last 8 overs with 4 wickets in hand the game was finely balanced. Once Steven was caught, Marcus Cunnington continued the good work with the bat.
Sadly the last 3 wickets fell for 6 balls and St Albans were 31 short of their target.

A great team effort, max batting points gained, but St Albans will left ruing a couple of catches and run outs that didn’t quite stick and might have significantly reduced the target.
