Totteridge Millhillians II v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 01 Sep 2018 at 12:30
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 35 runs
Match report
Totteridge. The last stop of St Albans 2018 1st XI Division 2A tour. A chance to reach the dizzy heights of third place a possibility but with promotion and relegation issues all settled it was a chance to enjoy a Saturday afternoon.
At the request of the hosts there was a 11.30am start to allow some of the players to attend a wedding that evening. Batchwood let some of its regular clientele leave early and Saints were asked to field on another sunny afternoon. The urgency of the hosts was not evident as Jamie scampered off to find the opening batsmen.
White and Winfield opened with each picking up a wicket in the early overs. At 25 for 2, Nathanson joined the overseas, Smith. Uttam bowled with control but Jamie's efforts were short-lived and expensive as the fast outfield and pronounced slope sent for four anything which beat the infield. Dan became the latest Rosson to suffer ill health and was sent off to the long grass at the bottom of the hill (without crampons)
The 3rd wicket partnership reached 119 in the 33rd over when Captain Max picked up the first of his four wickets. Whilst catches were taken, the ground fielding was not as high a standard on a tricky outfield. Kumara showed intent for his 25 as the run rate increased. Nathanson reached his hundred (113 balls) but his departure was in midst of a loss of 5 wickets for 31 in 6 overs. White bowled his allocation, taking an admirable 3 for 26. The last pair put on 34 as the innings closed in a flurry of boundaries at 285 for 9. Note that number 34. It’s important later on.
The batting order a little re-jigged to give Capaldi a break and White a chance to chat to his mum, found Hounslow and Jonny Armitage opening. Both batted cautiously but relished the chance to find the boundary when the bad ball arrived. Armitage was caught on the boundary one-handed but with the fielder clearly stepping on the rope. Shortly afterwards he was bowled for 15. Coulman joined Hammer but found run scoring difficult due to some hogging of the strike. Hammer was enjoying his afternoon and boundaries came at a pace. HIs 50 arrived from 58 balls. A change in bowler brought a twist. A spinner, yes another spinner, began the demise. Coulman was unlucky to be given out to a full toss played from chest height and Jamie’s bad day lasted 2 further balls. Drinks arrived at 112-3 (TM were 109-2 at the same stage)
Howeson’s struggles ended when he middle the ball only to be given LBW. Hammer went on nailing boundaries for fun but starting to tire he offered chances, the first on 81. Jacob plays as Jacob can. Connect and it travels far. He added impetus to the chase whilst Hammer sought that first senior hundred. It came with a single from the 117th ball he faced and included 16 fours (plus one all run for good measure). Mohammed removed Winfield, Harry Kendal was run out by a direct hit from the boundary by the overseas before Hammer’s time was up after one more drop on 107. HIs 118 (127 balls, 19 fours) stands proud on the top of the scorecard and is a welcome century for a popular player at the club.
The curious sight of two of the regular top three, White & Capaldi, emerging from the Pavilion at 8 & 9 meant hope continued. The run rate was in excess of 9 and the hosts were thinking the game was in the bag. Whilst both batted and ran aggressively, 47 coming from 30 balls, there were few boundaries. With 53 required from the last 6 overs, Capaldi departed. Uttam followed next ball and the rate got higher. White holed out to long off with St Albans some 35 runs short on 250 all out from 47.4 overs. Remember the 34 that the last wicket put on?
A competitive game which will be remember for Adam Hounslow’s century.
