Harefield v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 03 Jun 2018 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost

Match report Scorer Hall got the day off to a pretty nightmarish start by losing the toss and asking (unsuccessfully) for the Harefield skipper to bowl first in hope of a quick game, leaving St Albans (captained by Rudlin) chasing leather for 45 overs in the heat. The whole innings is probably left best alone given that Harefield scored 312-10 off 41 overs and quite a few of the surrounding gardens were peppered, but a few things are worth noting. Firstly, TFC specialist Dan Rosson bowled economically, only going for 35 runs in his 10 overs. Secondly, Haydog (with his sleeves rolled up to his shoulders) showed the maturity of a man expecting twins in August (congratulations to him, commiserations to local nannies) by taking an excellent low catch in the deep off Amy’s bowling. Thirdly, Rudders managed to take three catches (including two quite tricky ones) before dropping an absolute dolly which President Mardelli believed he would have taken.

After an excellent tea (Rosson in particular was uncontrollably excited by the inclusion of ice cream), St Albans got off to an absolute flyer, Moxy (46 off 40) and Rudlin (33) putting on an opening partnership of 87 in 12.3 overs. Credit to Moxy in particular who had been sick not very long before dispatching Harefield’s bowlers around the park. The St Albans innings was essentially one of two partnerships, but the latter one being the rather surprising combination of Hay and Rosson who came to the crease at 127-8 after a pretty spectacular collapse against Harefield’s impressive spin attack. Haydog batted in his now immediately recognisable style of the softest hands in defence and the hardest arms in attack, scoring 40* off 39. Rosson, despite scoring 19 runs all of last season, batted excellently (sweeps and reverse-sweeps galore) for 32 off 33, much to Hall’s delight (and I imagine, Harefield’s absolute dismay). This last hurrah carried St Albans up to 198, a respectable effort given the high quality of opposition they were up against and the significant absence of St Albans 1s/2s players. Plus, when Hay and Rosson put on 66 off 10 overs, it basically feels like a win anyway…
