St Albans Cricket Club Won by 20 runs

Match report A morning game at SLCG was arranged with the World Cup Final in mind and so St Albans and Southlands CC arrived to play a friendly 25 over match.

St Albans won the toss and batted first with Naveed Ahmed and Najib Khan opening. For the first 5 or 6 overs some care was taken to play themselves in but they both soon accelerated. Ahmed was eventually out for 28 and was replaced by Wilf Rush who was soon back in the ‘pavilion’ after being caught for 1 . Manny Nisar joined Khan and together they took the game to the bowlers, both eventually retiring on 50. A typically aggressive cameo from Michael Martin followed and Jamie Telkman looked fluent for his unbeaten 12 at the end .

A mention for Harry Knill-Jones who sportingly walked without question after the umpire didn’t hear the tiny nick that led to him being caught behind.

Saints finished on 193 for 4 at the end of their 25 overs.

St Albans took the field with Telkman and Martin opening the bowling with medium pace. The opposition batsmen weren’t going to die wondering and swung the bat from the off knowing that they had to make a fast start to chase down what was a big total. However, both bowlers kept it tight and were followed by Dave Ashton and Andy Saunders who took pace off the ball and snagged a wicket apiece (the one from Saunders a smart stumping from Knill-Jones).

The opposition batsmen were finding their range and were very much up with the run rate thanks mainly to the dangerous Dashyant who took a liking to all of the bowlers, smashing nine 4’s before retiring .

Altaf Hussain took 2 wickets in his impressive 4 over spell while Wilf Rush took him first adult wicket when he snared a caught behind, but it was man-of the-match Najib Khan who closed out the innings and mopped up the tail taking 4 wickets for just 12 runs in 2 overs.

With Southlands all out for 173 St Albans won by 20 runs.
