St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Bamville CC on Sat 01 Jun 2019 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 9 runs

Match report Another close game saw the 4s secure victory over hitherto unbeaten Bamville CC to make it 3 wins out of 4 in the league.

Surprisingly put into bat after losing the toss Saints openers Manny and Faz Nisar were all too aware of the vagueries of the SLCG pitch and set about their work carefully , although credit must go to groundsman Craig Ringsell and his team for calming the strip down since last weekend and doing a good job with the square in very challenging circumstances.

After a disciplined start Manny was undone by a ball that jagged back off the seam, which bought former 4XI skipper John Webber to the crease for his debut outing of the season . Between them Jon and Faz put on a solid partnership of 39 before John too was bowled for 19. Faz obdurately dug in and scored a creditable 29 before being adjudged LBW (by the now umpiring Webber) having set a decent foundation for the team.

Youngster Josh Mulvaney was looking comfortable before unwisely going back to a straight one and Amy Price was unable to get going on this occasion , which brought the enigmatic Khayrul Islam to the crease. A bit hitter by trade he was by his standards uncharacteristically watchful , accumulating runs and punishing bad balls, eventually holing out in the deep for a well-earned and impressive 45 .

Andy Milnes and James Sutton coming in with only a few overs to go didn’t trouble the scorers and it was left to the ever-reliable Tim Winfield to knock off a quick 14 runs at the end of the innings to get the team past the psychologically significant 150 mark supported by skipper Andy Saunders jealousy protecting his not out record for the season.

155-9 at the end of the 40 overs felt like a competitive total on this strip .

After another great tea provided by Julie (and sadly missed out on by the 13 fasting players taking part in the game) Tim Winfield and Andy Milnes opened the bowling for Saints and immediately started bamboozling the batsmen with Winfield striking first and clean bowling the opener for just 1 run before trapping the number 3 batsman LBW with the score on just 10. Andy Milnes then got in on the act taking the next 4 wickets and leaving the opposition on a precarious 75-6 at drinks.

A tight spell from medium pacer James Sutton (5-0-1-15 ) kept the pressure on with Josh Mulvaney (8-0-0-22) bowling intelligent off spin down the hill and once again finding himself unlucky not to be among the wickets as several edges evaded the fielders.

The runs were still coming though and while Bilal Siddique took an important wicket to leave the final pair needing just 9 runs from 4 overs the last batsman was starting to swing and had accumulated 29 good looking runs .

With the game very much in the balance skipper Saunders bought himself on and tempted the batsman down the pitch to sky one to the ever reliable Faz Nisar who took a fine running catch (one of his three great catches in the game) to secure a notable victory.

A really good team performance against good opposition puts the 4s in a really good position going into next week’s match against Watford Town .
