St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Flamstead II on Sat 31 Aug 2019 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 58 runs
Match report
The 4XI have had a very good campaign with a decent win ratio taking them within touching distance of promotion . Sadly, the weather and the perennial problem of availability on a couple of Saturdays ultimately conspired to scupper their chances of going up this season.
And so, with third place the remaining prize for a seasons hard work and with only two games left to play they took on the already promoted Flamstead 2XI at Sandpit Lane .
Losing the toss Skipper Andy Saunders was put into the field by the opposing skipper and opted for an opening bowling attack of the in-form Saud Fattah and Nadeem Arif . This paid dividends straight away as wicketkeeper James Lawrence snaffled the first of four caught behinds off Saud.
It was clear from the off that the Flamstead batsmen were going to take an aggressive approach though, with any bad ball dispatched to the boundary across a lightning fast outfield.
Nadeem snared another wicket as did Andy Milnes but the run rate was climbing as first one batsman and then another reached half centuries , both departing soon after reaching the milestone.
Josh Moore with his left arm medium pace bowled beautifully for a miserly 1-18 and deserved more reward in his impressive spell but it was the veteran Tim Winfield who smashed through the middle order taking 4 wickets for just 29 runs , a seasons best league tally.
The bowlers were aided by some excellent fielding with James Henderson in particular putting in an athletic performance at backward point.
In truth through some wayward bowling to batsmen swinging hard probably gave the opposition 30 or so runs more than they realistically deserved, and Flamstead finished with an above par score of 220-9 at tea.
This was a strong 4s team though and as Saints openers Manny Nisar, with over 600 runs in the bank this season, and new boy James Henderson strode out to the middle expectations were high for a decent chase. The opening pair put on a comfortable looking partnership of 44 in the first 10 overs before first James and then Manny were making their way back both having been bowled in the early 20’s.
And this , I’m afraid, was the story of the afternoon’s batting with all of the top order and several others getting decent starts without being able to capitalize, and when last man Saud was adjudged LBW in the 37th over Saints were still 58 runs short of the target.
The general feeling that this was an opportunity squandered and that truthfully it was a game that should have been closer. The effort and application couldn’t faulted though and the 4s go into their last game away at Berkhamstead next Saturday needing one last win to secure third place.
