St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 34 runs

Match report The 2019 season for St Albans 3rd XI concluded with a home fixture against Northampton Exiles, a match with nothing riding on it for either team.

Walker won the toss once more, to complete a season's record of 13 toss wins from 14 attempts. Choosing to field first there was something of a listless feel to the game as proceedings began, as those in the field felt the force of a chilly Sandpit Lane breeze.

Telkman and Vijender each claimed an early wicket as Saints controlled the early passages of play. Baylis added a third wicket as Exiles plodded along to a tally of 56/3 at drinks. From the top end, Walker found the wicket offered him some assistance, beating the bat regularly and finished with the very economical figures of 9/6/5/0; a wicket or two were deserved.

Exiles' number three, Marik (77), had settled in and picked up the pace and the game started to change complexion. Murphy, although taking a wicket, was not having his best day with the ball, and went for a few too many runs - perhaps the skipper erred in letting him continue. Saunders pitched in with one, too, but Saints seemed to have lost their way in the field by now, showing some end of season raggedness. Telkman and Vijender returned to complete the innings, both returning figures of 2/34. However over the last 15 overs, Exile had smashed 118 runs to lift their score to 193.

After another terrific, calorific tea, Henderson and Ferguson marched to the middle in search of that tally. Henderson fell first, falling into the trap of playing back on the Sandpit Lane pitch. At the other end, Ferguson started with a flurry of boundaries, recalling the good old days, before one stuck in the pitch and he spooned to cover. The direction of the innings was somewhat set. Nav began brightly and was looking well in control, until he incorrectly called for a single from the bowler's end, an offer which striker Watkins declined as the ball stuttered to mid wicket. The result was an inevitable run out, grave disappointment for the batsman, and a further nail in the coffin.

The bowling was not top class, and Moksy did what he does best, powering short deliveries to the boundary. Wickets had continued to fall, and Moksy's departure for 46, followed by Murphy just two balls later, left the score at 121/7 - Saints were still in the game, but only just. Baylis was looking composed, Walker briefly gave Exiles some concern but the finish came quickly as Saints fell 34 runs short, a disappointing result for a team that looked much stronger than their opponents.

Not many of the Saints lineup could be happy with their performance on the day; perhaps motivation was lacking. However in the broader context, this has been an improved season for the IIIs, nine wins placing them 5th on the League table, with many valuable contributors over the year. The 2020 season is something to look forward to.
