Broxbourne CC 2XI v St Albans Cricket Club 2XI on Sat 04 May 2019 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Won 73 runs

Match report An Artic Saturday in early May saw a ragtag mix of 2s, 3s and 4s Saints players heading over to the faraway Herts/Essex border for a pre-season tune up.

On arrival at the well-manicured environs of Broxbourne CC Naveed Ahmed introduced an unassuming , bespectacled Asian chap who had come along to “try out” for Saints.

“What do you do mate?” he was asked .

“I bat a bit,” he said quietly .

“Ok , you can open if you like,” said skipper Amit Rajani, having won the toss .

131 runs later Nas Kuttain, for that was this mystery man’s name, was retired not out having destroyed the opposition bowling with an untroubled and effortless innings.

Apparently, he “bats a bit”.

To be fair it wasn’t a particularly threatening bowling attack and in a game reduced to 35 overs after an early tea was taken during a downpour, several players chalked up runs including a well-made 56 from Naveed Ahmed, in an commanding total of 300.

Broxbourne 1XI were playing Saints 1XI at Clarence Park but that game was abandoned due to heavy rain so by this time the opposition first team had arrived back at their home ground.

Skipper Rajani was asked if some of the 1XI players might be allowed to bat to “make a game of it” and despite this being a bit “village” the request was agreed to and Broxbourne started their innings.

Jamie Telkman opened from the pavilion end and bowled a lovely tight spell of 5-0-8-1 , ably supported from the other end by ‘Issa’ , another of Naveed’s seemingly endless supply of ringers .

With two of Broxbourne’s 1XI batsmen coming in , including their overseas, Rajani and Adam Murphy came on to bowl . Although Rajani was hit for one of the biggest sixes any of of us have ever seen, he bowled well in difficult circumstances without taking a wicket . Murphy’s 1-65 off 7 overs illustrated how good batting conditions were.

With one of first teamers eventually snared by centurion Kuttain (an ‘enthusiastic’ stumping by stand in keeper Harvey Scott) old timer Andy Saunders was brought on from the pavilion end and managed to nip out the last two batsman in successive balls while stranding the overseas on a frustrating 88 .

A mention in dispatches for an excellent curry tea and to Barry for enduring the biting cold in his heroic umpiring stint.
