Match report The IIIs travelled to the picturesque setting of St George's School to take on Harpenden IVs for the fourth League fixture of the truncated 2020 season.

On a warm, sticky afternoon, Walker lost the toss and St Albans were duly asked to field first. Aside from the temperature, the pitch looked a good one, and together with a dry outfield and an invitingly short boundary on one side, all weighed heavily in the batsmen's favour.

Nevertheless, Saints were confident after a good win the previous week, and newcomer George Sims sent the first batsman back to the sheds, with just the fourth ball of the day. When Moksy added a wicket in his first over, Saints were in the early ascendancy. Harpenden responded admirably, even in the face of some sharp bowling from Sims, which beat the bat on numerous occasions. Saunders also grabbed an early LBW verdict in his favour, bringing Harpenden skipper McNeil to the crease. With some strong hitting, he guided the total to 4/143 before taking the aerial route once too often. Tarrant immediately knocked over another, to give him figures of 2/24. Harpenden sought to pick up the pace, largely with some "courageous" running between wickets, which yielded an intelligent run out for Lawrence. Meanwhile, Walker (2/27) was able to keep things in check, and Harpenden's 40 over tally came to 9/173. In challenging circumstances, this was a good effort by all the bowlers, each taking at least one wicket, and by a strong effort in the field - among others, Sargen's energy was a particular highlight.

Sargen and Tarrant made comfortable starts, but both were left to rue caught behind dismissals. In at three was Hussain, who quickly showed his timing, thoroughly dominating a partnership of 44 with Moksy, who never looked quite himself. Hussain, after a boundary-laden innings of 56, fell to a good catch, leaving Saints at 4/84 - less than half way to the target. With the game well balanced, it was time to show the team's steel - which is exactly what the in-form Mistry and Parkinson did. Patient when required, they struck the loose balls hard, and ran sharply to put Saints well in control. It was something of a shame to see Mistry fall for 35 after a partnership of 77, and a brief flurry from Lawrence - 9 off 4 balls! - before byes gave Saints the victory, with Parkinson not out on 33, in a comfortable 4 wicket win with overs in hand.

This was another solid team effort against a decent opponent. A strong team spirit has become part of the IIIs squad - keep up the good work!
