St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Markyate & Luton Town on Sat 21 Aug 2021 at 12.00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 103 runs

Match report On what was a very miserable set of conditions at Sandpit Lane it seemed pretty clear the options - play in drizzle or abandon and join the 2s at CP for early drinks!

Made of firmer stuff than the 2s, skipper Winfield decided to play and the M&L skipper was in full agreement as they were seeking promotion. After loosing the toss, new ball duties were given to Altaf and Joe Button in what can only be described as very heavy drizzle. Altaf bowled a reasonable line but the opening bat took a like and dispatched several boundaries. At the other end Joe Button maintained a good length, beating the bat and collecting 2 wickets for 41. Skipper Winfield moved Pelham to gulley and immediately the bat played straight into the bucket hands of Pelham. The M&L batters where clearly big hitters and several impressive shots left the 4s facing a huge score to chase with M&L racing to 74 off the first 10 overs.

First change of bowling brought Deshpande (PD) and Ian Ireland (Keanu Reeves) to bowl. PD bowled with great line and length and collected 1 for 27 from is 8 overs, whilst Keanu took 1 for 33 from 8 overs. After playing in trainers and slipping on his arse from the first bowl, Ireland and DP steadied the run rate, took a couple of wickets and M&L were 123 for 4 at 20 over drinks. It was time for Winfield to face the hard hitting M&L and was immediately dispatched for a 4 & 6 off his first over from the 007 batter. Changing to round wicket brought an immediate wicket, bowling 007 and then a combination of some line and length bowling with tempting bowling, good catches brought a further 3 wickets, followed by a C&B off a skier to claim a 5 for 44.

At 179 for 9 from 35 overs Saints hoped to complete the innings under 200, but M&L skipper batted really well, taking strike, hitting 4s and taking M&L to 231 with the last bat, finishing a disappointing 52 from the last 5 overs and a target of 231.

With a lot of batting to do! Shadwick and Melling faced some good, pace and line from M&L, finding runs hard to come by. A flurry of wickets fell and Saints found themselves at 26 for 5 after 13 overs and the end result at this time seemed fairly inevitable. Enter Tom Wilton and George Pelham to hopefully bring some respectability, which they duly did. Wilton played a very senior role, balancing defense with stroke-play and finished on 35, stumped from a very slow ball. Pelham was equally balanced, playing good defense and a number of 4s before a hard shot straight to gully. The end was inevitable, Ireland, Winfield, PD and Altaf all tried to be positive, taking a few boundaries but the total was never at risk and Saints finally finished at 128 all out in the 34 over.

The 4s lost by a big margin, but we played cricket, we got 13 points (more than a 10 for a cancellation), it was an enjoyable game, no dropped catches and played in a great spirit from both teams
