Pinner v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 12 Jun 2021 at 12:00 midday
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report The Third XI travelled to North West London to take on Pinner, with a warm afternoon in prospect, arriving to witness the host team going through a vigourous practice session on the square. Pinner certainly looked up for it.

The skipper duly lost the toss, consigning Saints to field first.

Undeterred, Broxton and Smith opened proceedings in lively fashion. Broxton, in particular, challenged the batsmen with good pace and an off-stump line that proved hard to get away, conceding just four runs in a solid six over opening burst. However, it was first change, Winfield, who got the breakthrough, with his first delivery lifted into the willing hands of Smith at mid on. This sequence of tight bowling building pressure, followed by an ill-judged attempt to hit out, followed through the first half of the innings, with the top six all caught. Saunders did well, until tiring near the end, to take 2/31, but Winfield had the pick of the figures. His nine over spell yielded 4/16 - three of the wickets perhaps the most innocuous deliveries of all, hidden amongst a controlled display of line and length swing bowling.

Broxton, sensing his moment had come, then returned for a final three over burst, which this time yielded a pair of wickets - the first of these caught at second slip, moments after Murray had been stationed in that position. How the skipper likes it when a plan comes together! Fair play to Pinner, they scrapped all the way to the end to eke out runs, but a 38 over total of 90 looked well short. Winfield, and Broxton's 9/5/5/2 spell, were standouts. The fielding deserves plaudits, too, with a pair of chances well taken in the slip cordon, a good catch from Nisar, a run out and solid ground fielding all backed up by a fine keeping performance from Mude.

As Nisar and Sargen strode to the middle after the tea break, it was noted that the hosts' strength lay in their bowling. The bowlers did nothing to lay claim to that title, yet Nisar (strangled down leg side), Sargen (bowled by a shooter), Hussain (caught after one deviated off the pitch) and Malik (adjudged LBW in a new interpretation of the law) all perished in quick time to leave Saints at 4/17 within five overs. The wicket, subdued when Saints had bowled, was now looking more like a minefield, and there were nervous faces in the dugout as Murray joined Mude in the middle.

This pair set about calming the nerves, though, batting watchfully while taking runs whenever possible - highlighted by Mude's sumptuous cover drive to the boundary. With Pinner forced to attack in their pursuit of victory, they kept aggressive fields in place throughout, so there were opportunities to be found. With the total on 65, it was a surprise when Mude guided one to a fieldsman, having crafted an invaluable 24 - top score on the day. Still, 26 runs were required, and just the bowlers to come. Murray, however, remained vigilant, playing the ball right under his eyes when possible, though the wicket continued to threaten, with both he and Broxton taking blows to the body. Broxton was able to free his arms on a couple of occasions, some extras were added to the score, and suddenly, with a powerful pull shot over mid-wicket from Murray, Saints were victorious. Murray's 23 was just the innings that was needed in the circumstance, capping off a fine all round team performance.

With another win on the board, the Threes are undefeated after six rounds, and with a growing unity in the squad, confidence is building.
