St Albans Cricket Club Won by 83 runs

Match report We fielded a strong team despite exam pressures and self isolation requirements. Watford were also weakened due to Grammar school exam requirements. St Albans lost the toss and were asked to bat first for the first time this season. Nerves were high, what was a good total on a soft and rain soaked track? R Barham and J Kleiner Mann got the team off to a solid but cautious start in line with coaches orders! As they got their eyes in the willow began to flail and the accelerator was pressed but the size of the outfield prevented many balls going for a deserved 4. J Keiner Mann fell to a catch looking to keep the score ticking along. O Brown, following his heroics the week before, came in at 3 and looked good but fell cheaply. He was replaced by L Berry looking to continue his good form and an excellent partnership was struck up between Barham and Berry. Barham fell agonisingly short (39) of a forced retirement but left with an enormous smile on his face. Coach jiggled the batting line up and sent in the big hitters. N Kleiner Mann joined Berry at the crease and both pushed the score forwards. Berry fell to an excellent catch on the boundary but J Kleiner Mann (38 NO) maintained his onslaught ably assisted by C Bavister and J Speller for the last couple of overs. The boys had racked up 140 in what was their best batting performance to date but could they back it up with the ball?

Orders were given at the break to pitch the ball up and no short stuff, work hard in the field and back up! Would they listen? N Kleiner Mann and C Bavister opened the bowling restricting the oppo to 13 off 4 overs with the former taking 1 wicket. They were replaced by J Dell and D Dave who bowled well and kept the pressure on. Both bowled their full allocation of 3 overs during the innings with Dell taking 1 wicket and Dave returning figures of 3 overs, 3 wickets for 4 runs. Excellent performances from our 4 front line bowlers. By this stage the oppo were 5 down for 25 runs so captain Bavister turned to other members of the team. Premium off spinner R Mordani entered the fray and pinned down 1 end taking a wicket with Berry supporting from the other with his medium pace. Berry's perseverence resulting in 2 wickets. Our fielding was strong despite a number of unnecessary wides and no balls. Speller filling in behind the stumps was vocal and kept well letting only 3 byes through. With the oppo reduced to 35 for 8 Bavister turned to spin of J Kleiner Mann and medium pace of O Brown to see out the game with some of their younger players coming to the crease. A very mature and sensitive decision by the captain to ensure no one got hurt in the fading light. Watford eventually ended their 20 overs on 57 meaning we won by 83 runs.

It was a brilliant performance by the group with every player contributing with either bat or ball. Fielding was strong until they relaxed in the last few overs but a very pleasing performance by the lads. It's just such a shame that the season has been so badly curtailed by weather but these are a talented bunch of lads who should fare well into the future. Well played boys!
