Holtwhites Trinibis III v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 17 Apr 2021 at 12:00 midday
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report The 2021 season began for the 3rd XI with a friendly curtain raiser in north London, as the team joined the 1sts and 2nds in taking on opponents from Holtwhites Trinibis.

Under clear blue skies that disguised a chill in the air, St Albans took to the field first, with the luxury of 12 men in the squad to allow a little fielding rotation. Of course, cricket remains bound to conform to certain Covid constraints, so closed changing rooms, hand sanitisation breaks and BYO teas continue to be the order of the day for the moment, but hey it was good to be outside playing cricket again.

Fattah and Winfield opened up for Saints and, like those that followed, worked through early season cobwebs. Fattah blasted his way through Turner's defences to grab the honour of the season's first wicket, with Winfield joining his opening partner when he dismissed Morley. Keen to rotate the bowling, Saunders swung the changes throughout the afternoon, almost inevitably with success as the bowlers found the wicket to their liking. Walker's '21 season began with wickets from his first two deliveries, while Davey also bowled an economical, wicket-taking spell. Newcomer Newitt took his first wicket, while Saunders and Tarrant also added made sure the W column was credited. It was a unfortunate that Mohamed, a new leggie, missed out on joining the wicket takers.

Having reached 40/1 before falling to 55/6, Holtwhites had finished with a total of 110. There were some demons in the wicket, that was clear, so the batters had a job to do.

The unfortunate Battula was an early departure, however his exit brought Melling and Sargen together. In the face of some decent and varied bowling, and with the constant threat of deliveries shooting low, this pair wisely took their time familiarising themselves with the wicket. Either that or it was simply a matter of making reacquaintance with the basics of batting after a long off-season. What was crucial was that the pair overcame these dual challenges, slowly building momentum (a momentum briefly suspended with a minute or two's deferential silence to the Palace). The score had reached 76 when Melling (29) succumbed to one that kept low. A platform duly set, Sargen upped the ante in parternership with Lowe, as the target was reached comfortably with eight wickets and overs to spare. Sargen was able to reach his half century before the target was reached, finding the boundary with regularity; well played.

This was almost the perfect season opener: sunshine, the introduction of some new faces, a chance for all to get involved, and a victory to enjoy. It's no mean feat for the club to get out more than three full teams for friendly fixtures in mid-April; such availability augurs well for the forthcoming league season. In the mean time, let the warmups continue.
