Hoddesdon 4XI v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 02 Jul 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 227 runs

Match report The 4XI ventured out to Herts/Essex hinterlands to play Hoddesdon 4XI , a team who have sadly conceded a number of matches this season due to the unavailability of players, a theme that is sadly becoming ever more common throughout the county.

We arrived at their second ground, which they share with Roydon CC, and a splendid little idyl it was too – nestled down an unmade lane and although the pitch and square were somewhat lopsided on a slope and the outfield was undulating, we were all a bit jealous of them being able to play in such pretty surroundings...

Skipper Saunders confounded expectations and won the toss, electing to bat and choosing Ashish Dean and Moksudul ‘Moksy’ Islam as his opening pair.

In truth, we will play stronger teams. The opposition’s blend of youth an experience looked undercooked from the start and our two openers went about their work in a workmanlike way, despatching balls to the boundary with regularity and running hard between the wickets.

At drinks Saints were already an impressive 134-0 with Moksy already on 81 and Ash a more measured 44. Moksy fell to a rank full toss soon after on 89 while Ash patiently went past 50 before succumbing on 85 ...

The half centuries still weren’t finished though as Nadeem Arif coming in at number 3 continued his good form with the bat to notch 52, supported by an eye-catching cameo of 36* from James Grant.

Saints final score of 291-4 from their 40 overs was by far their largest of the season and their third score of over 250 in a row.

After tea Saints were keen to get in the field as their innings had been one of the slowest on record at 3.5 hours with lots of ‘prevaricating’ in the field and at 4.30pm Prath Khatavakar and Sam Davey opened the bowling.

This next bit is pretty straightforward – Prath bowled well but it was the Sam Davey show as he dismissed the opening batsman with his first ball and then went on the rampage taking the top six batsmen for 24 runs in 8 overs.

Tim Winfield and Joe Button took 2 wickets apiece (although one of Tim’s wickets was a tiny 12 year old to be fair) to leave the opposition 64 all out and a winning margin of 227 runs .

There will be tougher tests ahead for sure but the 4XI will happily bank these 30 points and consolidate their 2nd spot in Division 10 East.
