St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Chipperfield Clarendon II on Sat 18 Jun 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 152 runs

Match report The Threes returned to Sandpit Lane expecting the week's summer temperatures to continue as they sought to bounce back from round six's reverse.

The toss was lost, once again, but Saints were able to bat first in any case, with Dean and Nisar sent out to start the innings off. Very quickly Dean looked in great touch, timing the ball well and finding the gaps. It was a surprise to see a little deviation off the wicket finding an edge to curtail his knock at 23. Law now joined Nisar who kept on with his work as the run rate held comfortably above four an over. By the twenty over mark, the tally had reached 88 for the loss of just the one wicket, the perfect platform from which to compile a big score.

After a quiet spell during which Chipperfield Clarendon's bowlers found a way to eliminate the ball balls from their repertoire, Nisar was dismissed for a well made 38, in the 31st over. Murphy then graced the crease for three overs before strengthening his hold on 2022's duck cup award, as umpire Thomas sent him on his way. Now deep into the death overs, Winfield chewed up 21 deliveries without scoring, before wisely falling on his sword and running himself out.

Fortunately Caley made more sense of the bowling and situation as he found a way to work the ball into the gaps and give the strike to the man at the other end. That was Law, who had taken control of proceedings in no uncertain terms. Having reached his 50 - with a big six no less - in the 32nd over, he upped the ante, powerfully striking down the ground, and running between wickets sharply. A milestone seemed imminent as Caley worked a single in the first ball of the final over, and a huge straight six brought the round of applause that signalled Law's century, a superb knock. This was the first ton for the Threes in nearly six years. With 23 taken off the last over, Law had reached 116, and Saints had totalled 227.

The final 10 overs had yielded close to 100 runs, and now it was Chipperfield Clarendon's turn to sit on the sidelines while bracing themselves against the unexpected cold, not a welcome place for the visitors. Would they be keen to stick around?

Saints of course had some work to do, and Rosson swung a beauty through Turner's defences to get things underway. Berry, back in good shape, added one of his own next over up, and really Chipperfield never gave a sense that they might give the target a nudge. Rosson finished with 2/32 after 8 overs that repeatedly saw the bat beaten. Accurate bowling allowed for some aggressive fields to be set, keeper Thomas trying not to be distracted by the slips quartet of Murphy, O'Toole, Winfield and Berry. Most of what had happened in the field was very good. though a couple of indiscretions caught the eye. Perhaps these could be avoided next time out?

Winfield, who had declined the opportunity to open the bowling in order to "loosen up" (aka sober up), joined the attack, and despite retching at the top of his mark, found good rhythm and was simply too good for the batsmen, who might have been distracted by the blood red whites that he was sporting. Still his return of 3/14 was well deserved. Murphy stole in for a couple of cheap wickets, and a couple of run outs completed the rout, Saints home by 152 runs.
