St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Phil Milton Charity Match on Sun 03 Jul 2022 at 14:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 67 runs
Match report
Clarence Park played host to St. John Fishers for the annual Phil Milton memorial game, and as custom a mix of youth and experience were on show. Ever present Sunday merchants Manny, Moksy and Winners were joined by father-son duo of Riley and Iain Curtis, with Riley playing his first senior fixture, and the promising Kleiner-Mann twins - who both gave skipper West a headache for half the day as he had to work out which one was which before attempting to pass instruction!
With both sides fielding 12/13 players each, and the bar open (Winfield making much use of this facility) fun and participation were the cause of the day, and with a 50 run retiring rule implemented to get everyone a go with regular field and bowling rotation agreed aswell, skipper West won the toss and sent in young Riley and Manny to open up the innings.
Manny continued in his rich vein of form and started solidly, running well with the 13 year old Riley who batted with the manner of someone who had been there and done it all before. He would contribute 5 before just getting through a shot too early to chip one back to the bowler and foil the plan to see the Curtis’ at the crease together.
Iain back from a lengthy lay off from the middle continued with Manny and contributed 16 prior to his body failing him - a pulled quad muscle retiring him, and not his calves like he had warned the skipper of before play. Josh K-M entered and had a brief stint prior to being bowled an “absolute seed” as Winfield would declare it later in the bar, although the accounts of this man could be disputed past 2:30 in the afternoon, Josh and Manny did attest that it had done all sorts.
Moksy and Manny then put together a good partnership to the point Manny reached his 50 and retired, bringing the other K-M, Nathan to the crease.
He started with a couple of well hit boundaries and carried on rotating with Moksy as they attacked the bowling on offer. A good catch saw Moksy depart for 37 and skipper West entered, causing scorer Josh to start recording strike rate as he, after 2 dot balls, declared that Westy was dooring it and should get a move on.
Nathan soon was on his way back, for a well made 30, after falling victim to the teasing draw of the tennis court side boundary, swiping across the line and the bails sent spiralling.
It was then quite frankly carnage that ensued. Lawrence managed to get through a shot so early that he scooped it into the keepers hands with the back of his bat - a comical dismissal.
The fool JC then made everyone wait 10 minutes before coming out, only just donning his whites as James walked out to the middle. He would depart after only 2 balls, as a fine edge was plucked out of the air by a quite extraordinary one handed take at slip.
Sude, playing his first Sunday game for Saints, then joined West and quickly made himself the senior partner in the duo - swatting away the bowling for a quick fire 15, including a magnificent switch hit to the long boundary. The skipper would then commit treason and run out his teammate, trying to force the issue late in the innings when buzzers were on offer.
Drunkard Winners filled skipper West with even less hope, but defied expectations and hit an entertaining 23. West’s scratchy 25 ending saw Manny come to resume his innings, with Riley resuming his injured father’s innings on his behalf. Saints closed on 231 all out, and after a inhalation of some late arriving TAVAH wraps, they hit the field to defend their above par score.
Nathan K-M and Sude opened up, with the latter taking two early wickets with some testing bowling. Nathan was unfortunate to see no return from his opening 6 over spell, with a couple of catches going down, but he bowled with excellent consistency and beat the bat on a number of occasions.
Riley and Saunders took the ball in hand next and, the co-chairman took one in his 3rd, caught and bowled.
At the other end, Riley, after a couple of looseners, found some probing lines and bowled well - he also was unlucky not to claim a wicket, a catch falling to Moksy at mid-on which was not taken.
Josh K-M then got his leggies going and struck in his first, with West taking the catch to remove their skipper. He would also claim the wicket of their other key batsman, as the catch popped up to James at slip. James then got himself a rare bowl and after being swept religiously by their young middle order batsman, a top edge fell to Nathan for James to claim his first wicket in a good few years, the on watching Murph would do well to take note of James’ ability to turn the ball.
Nathan then re-entered and claimed 3 quick wickets to receive just rewards for his efforts, West taking another catch for a Kleiner-Mann brother, and the other two clattering the “wooden thingys” as Winners had constantly asked him to.
With 1 over remaining, the concensus was that Manny should bowl and West had no arguments. After a first ball wide, the batsman got through one too early and looped one up behind the stumps… the on rushing West dove forward, taking a smart catch in a heap on the floor, to gift Manny his first wicket since 2011 and Saints the game.
A long, but enjoyable game of cricket played in good spirits, and a day thoroughly enjoyed by all. Most of all, there were a number of promising displays from the youth ranks of SACC - no doubt, there’s a lot to be excited about, a glowing endorsement to the Juniors section at the club.
