Aylesbury Town CC 2nd XI v St Albans Cricket Club 5XI on Sat 30 Jul 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost By 18 Runs
Match report
The 5XI made the lengthy trip to Ayelsbury seeking revenge for a heavy defeat earlier in the season. After losing the toss on a surprisingly green looking pitch St Albans were put into the field. Joe ‘1 Vet’ Botton opened and after a few looseners began to find a challenging line. Sud opened from the other end and got off to the perfect start, finding the inside edge before the ball clattered into leg stump.
From the other end Button continued to probe and was unlucky not to get a further breakthrough. The second wicket arrived soon after this time Sud trapping the other opener lbw leaving Ayelsbury 30 for 2. Charlie Bavister and Jithin came onto replace the openers and both immediately replicated the pressure built by them. This pressure eventually brought about the third wicket with Jithin forcing them into a suicidal run out thanks to some smart work from Sud and the returning Toby Crisp behind the stumps. The spells from Charlie and Jithin went unluckily without reward with Charlie finishing a very tight 6 over spell only conceding 17 runs.
The Ayelsbury batsman began to settle and tick the score past 100. Skipper Andy Melling came into the attack and after being hit for 3 boundaries off the first 3 balls of an over found the breakthrough in rather bizarre style. Springing across to his right to a ball drilled back at him, unable to take a spectacular one-handed catch but deflecting the ball onto the stumps running out the non-striker in the process. Some called it a drop, some called it a spectacular piece of fielding, a wicket all the same.
Zach Tarrant soon got in on the action picking up two quick wickets thanks to sharp catch from Charlie and a well guided yorker. Alexis and Jonathan both probed away unluckily without reward before Sud and Jithin came on at the death. Good death bowling from both restricted Ayelsbury to 213 with Jithin’s final over only going for 3. Not before Sud picked up his 3rd of the innings thanks to a good running catch from Alexis and a good chase and throw from Charlie gave St Albans their 3rd run out.
In response Jonathan and Zach opened and soon found the boundary rope. Zach departed with the score on 17 after receiving a peach of a delivery. Jonathan found the rope with more ease after that but also saw his stumps rearranged bringing the returning Toby Crisp to the crease with PD. Sadly Toby departed shortly after once again seeing his stops rearranged with another seaming delivery. PD and Webber settled in to rebuilt the St Albans innings and take the score past 50. Webber fell victim of another good deliver bringing Joe Button to the crease with the asking rate now creaping past 8 an over. Making the most of any lose balls the pair began to up the rate and find the boundary with increasing regularity. After taking the score past 100 PD departed for 27 unluckily finding midwicket trying to dispatch a full toss. Alex joined Joe and looked to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Joe continued to find the rope dragging St Albans within sight of the target in the process. Shortly after he brought up a brilliant 50 with a glorious 6 over long off. Two quick wickets however made the task that bit harder. Charlie, Jithin and Sud all looked to attack and brought St Albans to within a sniff of the total. The rate ultimately proved too much with wickets coming with more attacking stoke play. With 26 required off the last two Andy came in at number 11 nursing a hand injury from fielding, he nudge 5 before Sud was bowled to give Ayeslbury a 19 run victory.
