St Albans Cricket Club 6XI v Old Elizabethans on Sat 16 Jul 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 21 runs

Match report On a hot sunny day SACC 6XI made up of youths from U13s, U15s as well as
some long-serving SACC members welcomed a strong Old Elizabethans from
North London.
After some great performances in U13s and U15s, Jude Berry made his adults
debut for SACC as well, which persuaded junior section chief Nick Berry to play
in the team as well after several years.
Getting to bowl first with 10 men on a dry and fast outfield Jude Berry and
Tom Banks opened the bowling attack. Both bowled with good line and length
against good opening batsmen and kept them in check although the runs
flowed consistently.
Jithin, making his debut for SACC came in as a first change and continued to
keep the opening batsmen in check in partnership with Jude Berry. After
missing some close chances off his bowling, Jithin managed to break the
opening stance with a catch off his own bowling. OECC continued playing
positive cricket, but Charlie and Jithin managed to take a couple of more
wickets slowing down the run rate.
The other opener Asim managed to hit a half century, but Vikas managed to
get his wicket in a timely manner after a few chances fell short off the catching
fielders. Giles Bavister came on and bowled a good spell considering it was his
first match after a while but the pick of the bowler was Alexis Awonuga who
bowled 7 overs on the trot with a very fine line, length, and bounce. He
managed to give away only 19 runs even while bowling during the end of the
innings and was unlucky not to get a wicket. Jude, Charlie and Jithin helped to
close OECC innings on a manageable 208.
6XI were confident at the break about the chase and went into bat with a
combination of youth and experience. The OECC opening bowlers bowled with
good pace, excellent line and length and we lost our first wicket within the first
over. Charlie and Nick Berry steadied the innings but Charlie lost his wicket too
after some really good boundary hits. This brought Jude Berry on the crease
and father and son duo steadied the innings with Nick starting to look good
after some rusty shots (playing after 5 years) but lost his wicket soon too. Andy
Knill-Jones and Jude increased the run rate with excellent boundaries and
running between the wickets before Andy fell to a questionable no ball.
Alexis joined Jude at the crease and kept up with the run rate without taking
any risks. The drinks break stopped the momentum and Jude fell on the first
ball after the break to bring another bright prospect Tom Banks on the crease.
Tom played some really lofty shots along with Alexis who was able to find gaps
with ease. Alexis soon fell for a well-made 23 which brought another debutant
Jithin to the crease. Tom and Jithin played with a lot of composure, hit the bad
balls away, good running between the wickets even with Tom hobbling during
some runs due to injury. Both brought SACC within touching distance of the
win. OECC sensed that the match was getting away brought their best bowlers
back onto the attack. Tom lost his wicket soon after for a well-made 33 while
trying to accelerate the innings.
Saints lost their last 3 wickets in the 37th over while trying to get to the target
including some questionable LBW decisions. Even adding yet another Berry,
Jake, as a last minute 11th player for batting did could not help us get a win.
Jithin on 39* simply ran out of partners in the end but had an impressive debut
for SACC.
6XI gave a tough fight to an opposition team who hardly gave any extras, had
good batting line up and could have given a good fight to our 4s. Overall it was
a great day for some really exciting youngsters of SACC and everyone else
involved in the game.
