St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Crouch End 1st XI on Sun 11 Jun 2023 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost By 7 Wickets

Match report The Sunday 1’s were back to the wonderful chess valley league after a not-so-successful t20 outing last week. Welcoming Crouch End CC to Clarence Park.

Resuming his good tossing form, the saints were relieved to be batting first on a scorching day.

A poor start losing the early wickets of stu moxy and Howse. Howse was very apologetic to the skipper explaining how he never plays attacking shots and how disgusted he was in himself for swiping across the line! Thankfully, due to technical difficulties, the start was not live-streamed on YouTube. This left Westy and Simms at the crease; the score 29-3. Both batting sensibly punishing the bad ball and bringing up the 50s applauded in good time. Between overs, both stated how good of a chance this would be to ton up. Unfortunately, this led to Westy’s departure for a very important 56. Bringing the inform Tom Wilton to the crease! Unfortunately, his stay was brief, proving scoring runs on Saturday and Sunday is almost impossible. All the while Simms was now in the mid 70’s although he was becoming increasingly frustrated as he impressively hit fielder after fielder resulting in numerous bat slaps to the pads. A partnership with Lawrence in which they decided not to hit boundaries and for some reason run numerous 2’s, 3’s and 4’s on one of the hottest days of the year meant a very tired Simms had his maidan 100 for the club before deciding that was enough and getting out the very next ball, well-batted sir. Murph then entered scooping and reverse sweeping to great effect bringing the Saint's total to 241 not a bad effort from 29-3 but with a very short boundary, one side may be slightly under-par.

Berry and Curran were given the new ball and both started well however the Crouch End openers made it very apparent they were in a hurry and made a rather fast start. The skipper not helping proceedings dropping a snick off JC low to his right. Berry made the breakthrough after Lawrence told Westy to come in from Long on, the next ball the dangerous opener chips one right to him. However, Crouch End was 109-1 at the first drinks (15 overs). This led to the introduction of Stu “Warne” Murray who was the standout of the bowlers, unlucky to only get 1 wicket, proving difficult to play and not giving the Crouch End batsmen many bad balls. Stu would’ve had two if it wasn’t for Berry deciding to pluck the ball beautifully out of the sky with his foot rather than hands. Murph’s master plan of two catching men at short cover forced another breakthrough. However, Crouch End were always comfortable, well above the required rate and despite efforts from a passing dog who decided to leave a present on the outfield to halt proceedings they chased the total with 6 overs to spare and 7 wickets to spare.

A good effort from the Saints with the bat, notably from Simms and Westy. The less said about the bowling and fielding the better.
