Hoddesdon 3XI v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 17 Jun 2023 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report Turn left onto Ermine Street’ ought probably have read ‘when you see Ermine Road on your right, turn left on to the gravel path, and park in the field’. That said, a picturesque setting was uncovered, with fields on three sides, allotments on the fourth and a beautiful church tower overseeing proceedings.
In the absence of regular skipper Saunders, stand-in Winfield strolled out at 12:48 for the toss. Moments later he was back with his tail between his legs after the bold claim of ‘it’ll land on its edge’ failing to bear fruit. And so the 4s took to the field. After a tricky match last week, a swift response was required.
Tight spells from Ash up the hill and Sud down the slope helped to keep runs very much in check. Some variable bounce from the soft topped wicket made batting tricky, and Marcus Cunnington behind the stumps did particularly well, conceding zero byes in the innings. It took until the 8th over of the innings before Sud forced the breakthrough, clean bowling one of Hoddesdon’s openers after he had been mostly watchful. The score poised at 13/1 at that point. A change in the bowling, with Rajiv operating up the hill brought immediate dividends. Inspired captaincy by Tim Winfield (I was told to write). Rajiv went on to bowl a spell of 4 overs, 1 maiden, 5 for 5. Twice he was on a hat trick, the first of which saw a refusal for a tricky caught and bowled chance, but no one will begrudge him that as he bowled with superb drift and the occasional bit of turn, leaving every batsman flailing at thin air as he decimated Hoddesdon’s chances. A steepling catch from James Grant punctuating a series of clean bowled wickets.
At the other end, Benn Glazier took over from Sud. It took him a while to find his length, but that really didn’t matter, as the first ball of his spell, a rank short pitched ball, took the back edge of a batsman’s attempted shovel to leg, with Cunnington taking a sharp one handed catch while going the wrong way. A full pitched straight one at the end of his first brought another clean bowled wicket. After 22 overs of not touching the ball in the field other than to return it to the bowler, skipper Winfield brought himself into the attack. A solitary over was all he got, as Arif took the final wicket, caught Crisp at short mid wicket. A score of 48 all out did not feel too threading, as the Saints left the field with their heads (and the match ball in Rajiv’s case) held high.
After a brief tea break, Ahaan Dean and Grant walked out brimming with confidence. A nice tickle behind leg looked to settle any nerves Dean may have had, but he unluckily chopped a short ball back onto his stumps. That brought Najib Khan to the crease and he and Grant set about taking down the target with aplomb. 12 overs is all it took, and we left Hoddesdon with 30 points at just after 16:00, Grant finishing 19 not out, and Khan 18 not out. A comprehensive performance to hopefully start a new winning run for the fours.

Fineable moments:
Sud - airplane celebration bowling a 14yr old
Ben - long hop for wicket, that batsman questioned if bounced twice
