Hatfield Hyde 2XI v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 12 Aug 2023 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report The Future Is Bright

With reduced availability and some last minute changes, the 4s team to visit Hatfield Hyde was very different from the previous weeks and included two young players making their senior cricket league debuts; Sulaiman Nisar (13) and Kara Vijinder (14) and both fitted in very naturally to the adult format and did well.

Starting with 10 players, it was a good to toss to win and Winfield did not hesitate in choosing to bat first. After the bad weather of recent weeks it was great to be playing and even a bit of drizzle and dark skies was no challenge to play through.

Ash and Manny opened the batting and faced a very good opening bowling pair, who both had good carry, helped by a touch of light drizzle. Scoring was not easy and Manny was struggling to find his usual fluent style and had many play and misses close to his bat edge, whilst at the other end Ash found rhythm and used the pace so some nice cover shots for 4. Scoring at 2 an over in the first 10 overs, then became tricky as both Ash (30) and Manny (12) fell LBW, leaving the 4s at 53 for 2 at the 20 over drinks. The run rate would need to upped in the second half to get to a competitive total and this became even more of a challenge with a flurry wickets falling to the wily slow bowler from Hatfield.

From 32 for 2 at drinks, Pete Melling fell for 19, which then followed a collapse leaving the 4s at 77 for 8 in the 30th over, with 3 ducks, the 5 middle order bats adding a mere 6 runs. Winfield and Pelham came to the crease as 9 & 10 bats, with the skippers instruction to bat the overs and we might get to 100! Pelham played a great knock, defending the good balls and taking every opportunity to hit out and made a very fine 32 not out, including 2 fours in the final over. With Winfield at the other end making 18 not out, this 50 run partnership enabled the 4s to get to a more respectable 125, but still short of a par score.

With a low total to defend a good start was needed and Dean and Vijender U, were given new ball duties and the hope they would get some good carry. Ash did not disappoint and bowled an excellent spell, beating the bat several times and finishing with 2 for 29 off 8 overs. Uttam looked out of sorts and was replaced by Jithin after 2 overs as the scoreboard was racing along as Hatfield were 40 for 0 off 6 overs. With Jithin taking a wicket and Ash taking the scalp of the dangerous opening bat from a classic outside edge caught by Pete, there was a small glimmer of hope. In the search for wickets, Pelham was introduced and bowled a tidy 5 over spell for 11 runs and the run rate came down significantly.

At drinks Hatfield were 89 for 3 and the skippers instruction to make them work hard and take batting points, exemplified by Kara who fielded with great energy and enthusiasm. Winfield bowled 5 overs without success, a couple of edges behind which were hard chances behind the stump, it was time for the very eager Sulaiman to make his bowling debut. Winfield assumed Sulaiman would bowl his spin that he had seen in the nets and was surprised at the long run up measured out and informed its seam up for games and spin for nets! First over in senior cricket was a maiden and it got even better in the second when he had hist senior wicket with a plumb LBW. The first of many to come.

The outcome was inevitable and Hatfield reached the target in the 31st over. The team showed a lot of character throughout and made Hatfield work hard for the victory whilst Saint collected some valuable losing points.

The highlight of the game was at the end to have both Uttam and Manny present the caps to Kara and Sulaiman. With the Nisar, Vijender and Dean families all having fathers play with their sons / daughters in the league this season, this is a great sign for the club future.
