Match report A Friday evening fixture on the Common at Harpenden - for many of the 8 it was their first ever cricket match, and each and every one of the team was a credit to St Albans Cricket Club. A match with many ebbs and flows ultimately ended in defeat, but we should keep our heads held high after a performance high in effort and endeavour. Ultimately we were undone by one player - Harpenden's Josh Simons, who scored 31 runs in 12 balls and bowled five overs for five runs.

Benji Wilson won the toss for St Albans and decided we should attempt to set Harpenden a target to chase, presumably thinking ahead to the fading light and cooler conditions that we'd encounter come the near 20:00 finish. Highlights of the St Albans innings were Oscar Roberts and Harry Newman's clean striking, both finding the boundary on more than one occasion. 7 wickets lost meant that we finished on 229 after our 20 overs - some superb wicket-taking deliveries from Lauterpacht (finishing with 5/22) the highlight for Harpenden.

At the time 229 felt a little light, but midway through Harpenden's innings St Albans would have perhaps considered themselves favourites, with the wickets tumbling to keep the run-scoring in check. Harpenden's third pair soon extinguished St Albans' hopes, with one five ball over going for 18. A miserly three over spell that went for six by Joshua Price, and wickets for Oscar Devine, Owen Edgson and two each for Aston Crisp and Harry Newman were the highlights of St Albans bowling efforts. Catches for Aston, Joshua, Benji and Harry underlined the effort put in in the field by the team.

As the light was fading and the temperature plummeting, Harpenden secured the win, but the St Albans team must take heart from a great all round performance.
