St Albans Cricket Club 1XI v Knebworth Pk (Becker Cup 3rd Round) on Sun 11 Jul 2004 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won St Albans win by 1 wicket
Match report
St Albans moved into the ¼ final of the Becker Trophy following a one of the best games witnesses at Clarence Park for some time.
St Albans won the toss, and captain, Jaffer Chaudrey pondered for a moment, before asking Knebworth Park to bat. It was a decision that looked to have back-fired, as Knebworth set off at over 6 runs an over. Glen Turner had a chance for a wicket in the 4th over, but the catch was dropped at slip, his first spell giving 40 runs from 5 overs. Richard O’Toole bowled well, without much luck.
Overseas player Zeeshan Butt took over from Turner, but had to be withdrawn, following an injury. Jaffer replaced O’Toole, and despite going for 21 runs from his first two overs, he made the breakthrough when he bowled Holmes for 24, with the score on 100.
Another 50 run partnership ensued, until the introduction of Peter Crews, saw him take a wicket with his first ball. The dangerous Reardon was taken by Turner on the boundary.
St Albans now had some command, but were a little slow on the over rate, which was becoming a problem. Crews struck again 6 overs later when he had Riley, caught behind for just 5.
Raza ‘ I have a bad hand’ Chaudrey left the field, with a hand injury after a difficult catch was dropped. Knebworth Park were 196/3 from 37 overs, but St Albans then put a break on the scoring, by taking wickets. Crews continued to break partnerships and ended with figures of 4-40. Turner returned and in a more impressive spell, took two further wickets, as the Knebworth Park runs slowed.
At the end of 3 ¼ of play, St Albans were 3 overs short of the required rate, and would be docked this amount from their return. Knebworth Park finished the 50 overs, with a run-out off the last ball to give them a total of 250.
Was this going to be enough? Had St Albans made it difficult by a poor over rate?
After a most sumptuous tea, the run chase began with Cameron Box and Andy Fleming. Or so the run chase should have started. Three overs bowled and not a run on the board !! Things went from bad to worse, as Box was caught behind for just 2. Zeeshan Butt came to the wicket to join Fleming, who having taken 13 balls to get off the mark, then despatched three balls to the boundary. St Albans were off and running.
Although St Albans were well behind the run rate, the scoreboard continued to tick over. In the next 90 minutes, the pair progressed the score to 115 off 27 overs, before the introduction of slow bowler, Fisher saw Fleming stumped (or was that run out ??!!) for 38. Edwards soon followed, also stumped. Meanwhile, Zeeshan Butt brought up his 50, from 67 balls and was looking in good form. O’Toole and Crews both fell cheaply in the quest of quick runs. Crews despatching his first ball over the boundary for a mighty six !!
St Albans were slipping behind the rate, and were on the back foot. Butt accelerated, and with Jaffer Chaudrey, began to push the rate up, by turning 1’s into 2’s and hitting the boundary. Butt completed a fine century, but then fell going for one big hit too many. A fine innings was brought to an end for 101.
Jeffer than proceeded to run Raza ‘I still have a bad hand’ out, all in the cause for quick runs. Wilder soon followed, trapped leg before, without scoring.
St Albans needed 50 off the last 6 overs and Jaffer and Afroz Khan plundered the bowling, with the telling over being the 45th. Jaffer and Afroz both hitting big 6’s, as they took 20 off the over. Jaffer was bowled in the penultimate over, and it looked as if the game was up. Or at least, that’s what Knebworth thought. Enter Glenn Turner who hit the first ball for 2, and followed it up with a classic extra cover drive for 4.
Into the final over and just 5 required. Turner on strike, first ball….. leg glance for 4… Game won, but just to make sure, he pushed the next ball for a single.
St Albans had won, 251-9 with 4 balls to spare.
A tremendous, enthralling game of cricket, which was a credit to both sides. St Albans move on into the ¼ finals on 25th July. Lets hope it lives up to the standard of this game.
WELL DONE JAFFER AND THE BOYS………
