St Albans Cricket Club 5XI v North Mymms 3XI on Sat 11 May 2024 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report After a rain hampered - but very positive - first season the 5s wanted to continue the good work of departing skipper Tom Cocks. After the remnants of a party on the outfield and losing the toss St Albans took to the field on a glorious day at Sandpit Lane. Tim Winfield took the new ball to open the season for the 5s. He is the master of the grass wicket at Sandpit Lane, but could he do it on a hot cloudless day on the astro (the cricket equivalent of a cold rainy night in Stoke)? The answer was yes, despite a wicketless opening spell Winfield and Jithin restricted the opening pair to below two an over with some tight lines and the aid of well grown outfield. Both were unlucky not to make the breakthrough after
troubling the opening pair.

Bowling changes saw Sud and Andy Melling come into the attack. The breakthrough came not long after with the skipper luring the batsman into a false sense of security with two wayward deliveries; before bowling one on the stumps which moved from leg to clip the top of middle. With balls flying agonising close to fielders and drinks on the horizon a second wicket was needed as reward for a good bowling effort in the opening 20 overs. The ever dependable Sud proved once again why he is the best Irishman in the club by duly delivering with his usual pace and bounce, finding the glove with a searing delivery straight in the bucket hands of Jack Benjamin in the gully.

Buoyed by the arrival of the newest St Albans ultras in their push chairs, the 5s continued the charge after drinks, Ethan Witty picking up the next as part of a fine spell, another catch from Benjamin. Two more followed soon after, with Benjamin using his variations to good effect, dismissing two North Mymms batsmen in successive ball. Despite the excitement the hattrick ball was seen off. Debutant David Wynne-Griff picked up 3 quick wickets with his off spin deceiving the North Mymms lower order. With another hattrick ball seen off North Mymms finished on 115-8.

James Grant and John Webber opened the St Albans innings positively with the outfield quickening under the afternoon sun. After a fine keeping display Webber was unlucky to top edge a pull shot into the hands of his opposite number. Despite a 5am trip to the hospital (his wife entering labour) against the odds, PD walked out to bat at number 3 under the instructions to score a daddy hundred. Neither batsman laboured as they found the gaps and pushed the 5s towards their total with Grant soldiering on through a thigh niggle, a true 5s hero. With PD falling LBW for 10, Wynne-Griffiths came to the crease. After both batsmen were given reprieves from dropped catches, they began to cut loose with the ball
flying to all parts of Sandpit Lane. Both batsmen taking the more aerial route due to the tough outfield. They steered the 5s to their target with 15 overs to spare with imperious on drive from Wynne- Griffith to finish on 37*, with Grant
finishing on a fine 44* at the other end. A good start to the season, onto Redbourn next week.
