St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v President's XI on Sun 25 Aug 2024 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 90 runs

Match report With Guy Black sadly unavailable due to COVID, Matt Howeson must have sensed an opportunity, dressing so smartly that he not only secured himself a transfer to the President's XI but also acquired skippering duties for his new outfit in a bloodless coup.

After the customary non-toss, Jai Mukherjee and Dom Watkins got the President's XI off to a solid start before falling to Saunders and Murray respectively (both, I believe, for the second year in a row). With Essex 2s gun Harry Seagrave waiting in the wings at number 4, Howeson put Mark "Mini" Telkman in at number 3 to ensure that the run rate did not get out of control. Telkman (and later Andy Arnold) fell to West, but the latter was not able to secure the wicket of his "bunny" Seagrave, who was instead dismissed by Club XI captain Joe Regan bowling off spin thanks to a well-held catch in the deep from the returning Jimmy Rosson.

Any concerns at 125-5 about a typical St Albans collapse were halted by the anti-collapse cheat code, Simon White. Ably supported by new AK Brand ambassador Jaffer Chaudry, the two experienced heads showed no post-lunch hangover, instead batting like two men who had just enjoyed an excellent Tavah meal and delectable cupcake provided by Manny Nisar and Annie O'Gorman respectively. James Lawrence's off spin proved to be Chaudry's downfall for 27, and the wicketkeeper made it a 3-fer in quick time with the wickets of Sandipan Chanda and Howeson (for a very amusing first ball duck). Some final blows from Jonny Hall and White (50*) brought a mid-over declaration from Howeson who had seen enough, 215-8 the final score.

Viral phemonenon Ash and Ahaan Dean opened the batting against Jacob Roche and Jamie Telkman, but one can only worry about the future of their content creating partnership after father Ash resoundingly barbequed young Ahaan even despite Hall's slow motion gathering of the ball at the stumps (prompting some trademark incredulity from Ben Ramsay). A lesson learned for Ahaan for not tidying his room, if nothing else. Ash batted like a man that was determined to redeem his good name, but his run-a-ball 40 was somewhat unlikely ended after smoking one straight to White at mid-on off the bowling of Andy Walker. A vintage Walker spell of 1-4 from 4 overs was a joy to watch, especially his tense battle with Murray who was clearly determined not to get out to the wiry wily Australian.

There was no respite for the Club XI, as Telkman, Seagrave, and even Chanda settled into good rhythms that would ultimately result in the end of the stays at the crease for O'Gorman, Molly Green, and Murray (much to Telkman's delight who delivered the ). Whilst the neutrals would have been hoping for some lower order resistance from the Club XI, an eventful spell from Chaudry (4-21) saw to that, featuring an excellent catch from White over his shoulder, a grab from Howskeeping stood up, and a strong candidate for the Holy Moment of the Day as Lawrence was clean bowled to the tune of the now often heard circus music soundtrack. There was a hint of blocking to survive a draw from Regan and Rosson until the latter deemed Hall's seam bowling too poor to pat back, unfortunately skying one to mid-on in the process to secure a dominant 90 run victory.

President Peter Mardle was clearly overjoyed with his team's showing, performing what I believe might have been his finest ever rendition of the "Big Tank" song at the ripe old age of 82. Thank you to all of those who returned to CP to play and those who came down to watch throughout the day, with a special mention to the Beer XI captained excellently by Jacob Winfield. And of course, a massive thank you to the umpires (Tim Harvey and David Wormald) and scorer Claire Odgers for giving up their day. Until next year ...
