Hertford v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 25 Apr 2009 at 1.30
St Albans Cricket Club Won

Phil Caley hit a 65 ball century and then promptly retired as Hertford's bowlers wilted under the onslaught. He hit 90 of his runs in boundaries, 15 fours and five sixes. No one was immune but James Mead with an economy rate of 4.3 from his seven overs came out best. For the rest their figures would have been poor in a twenty-twenty match let alone one of 40 overs as this game was played. Dan Nicholls, Caley's opening partner, also found the Balls Park pitch much to his liking and rattled up a relatively sedate 46 off 47 balls before being caught at mid-on by Richard Cordingley off Andy Brazill. This was Hertford's only success as St. Albans rubbed Hertford's noses in the dust reaching the target of 214 with eleven and a half overs to spare.

Hertford had opted to bat first and at the break would have thought 213-6 a competeitive score. Elliott King played some fine shots, especially his clips to leg, in an innings of 74. Rob Slater was given a shot as King's opening partner but found the fielders too often. Graeme Riddle, making a rare first team appearance, gave the scoring rate some impetus with 60 off 50 balls. Once he had found the meaure of spinner Jim Chaudry he struck him for three fine sixes before being dismissed by a clever slower ball from Martin Jones. Will Bancroft chipped in a with a quick fire 25.

St. Albans will be back at the Park in two weeks time for the opeining league fixture. Hertford's bowlers will have some sleepless nights before then.
