Shenley Village CC 4th XI v St Albans Cricket Club 5XI on Sat 07 Jun 2025 at 13:00
Match was Abandoned

Match report Saints 5XI travelled to Shenley Village amid uncertainty following overnight rain. Fortunately, the weather cleared up, the pitch dried quickly, and the game was able to go ahead. The plan was to bowl first, restrict the opposition to a low total, and chase it down efficiently. However, things didn’t quite go to plan, as skipper Imran lost the toss, and the Shenley captain unsurprisingly chose to bowl first, likely with a similar strategy in mind.

Maruf and Fozan opened the batting for Saints, but Maruf departed early with a rash shot. That brought skipper Imran to the crease, who looked positive and aggressive, striking three quick boundaries. Unfortunately, a mix-up while attempting a second run from a well-timed pull shot led to a disastrous run-out. Both batters ended up at the same end, and Imran was dismissed for 13—a disappointing and unlucky end to a promising start.

A flurry of wickets followed, and Saints slumped to 75/7. At that point, it looked like they might not even reach 100. But young Haris and Jamie had other ideas. The pair played with composure and flair, putting together a crucial eighth-wicket partnership worth over 50 runs. Their efforts not only resurrected the innings but also put pressure back on the opposition, who knew that anything over 150 would be tough to chase.

Haris was eventually dismissed for a superb 81—his first fifty for the club, and an innings to remember. He showed great maturity, playing each ball on its merit and anchoring the innings beautifully. Saints finished on a competitive 157.

Defending the target, 5XI veterans Altaf Hussain and last week’s 4XI match-winner Nathan Roos opened the bowling with discipline and accuracy. They maintained a tight line and length, offering no freebies. The pressure told, and Shenley’s openers struggled to score freely. A risky single led to the first breakthrough, with one of the openers run out for just 3.

Shenley’s skipper came in at number three but looked uncomfortable against Altaf’s pace. He managed two fortunate boundaries before being dismissed for 13, leaving Shenley at 36/2 after 11 overs.

Just as Saints were tightening their grip on the game, the rain returned. With the pitch muddy and conditions deteriorating, both captains agreed it was too dangerous to continue. It was a tough call for Saints, who had Shenley on the ropes and were pushing for their first win of the season. Even Shenley’s remaining opener, though solid, seemed unsure at the crease.

In the end, the match was called off, and the points were shared. Saints 5XI will be disappointed not to come away with the win, but the performance—especially from Haris and the bowlers—offered plenty of positives to build on.
