St Albans Cricket Club Lost By 24 runs

Match report Saints 5XI travelled to Langleybury on a Beautiful-sunny day. Saints won the toss and skipper Immy opting to bowl first — a strategic decision given their weakened bowling lineup this week.

Langleybury CC put up a competitive total of 213/8 in their 40 overs, building their innings patiently and capitalizing on lapses in the field. Saint Albans’ bowlers had their moments, with Vttam Vijender leading the charge, delivering a tight spell of 8 overs, 2 for 25. He was well supported by Jamie Coffer, who also bagged 2 wickets for 33 runs in his full quota. Nasibullah Maroofkhel also chipped in with a late triple-strike (3/19), helping to stem the flow of runs at the death. However, the Saints were their own worst enemies in the field. A spate of mis fields, along with a costly 15 wides and 6 no-balls, handed Langleybury valuable extra runs and momentum. These 21 extras and 15-20 runs from midfields were ultimately the difference between a chaseable target and a steep one.

With a target of 213 on the board, the second innings promises to be a test of temperament and batting depth for the Saints. Chasing 214 for victory, St Albans got off to a steady start but lost early wicket of Maroof on 3,James Grant and Fozan Ahmed both compiled gritty 57s, forming the backbone of the innings and keeping hopes alive for the visitors. Saints were 84-1 after 20 overs and 130 were needed from 120 balls. The chase faltered after their dismissals, with a middle-order collapse that left too much to do for the lower order. Both of the set batters tried to score quickly but lost their wickets by doing so and tight bowling in middle overs put the moment back to LangleyBury. After 34 overs Saints were 156/5, skipper Immy was in the crease with young Suli who fought hard for his 27 but didn’t get the runs as quickly as he wanted to and Immy ran himself out by trying to get the strike back but unfortunately the run was never on and he was run out for 8 . Saints needed 47 from 24 balls and it was too much to ask for the lower order who couldn’t quite finish the job, and St Albans eventually closed on 189/7, falling 24 runs short.

A match that could have gone either way was ultimately decided by Langleybury’s ability to capitalize in the middle overs with both bat and ball. For St Albans, there were plenty of positives, especially in the top-order batting, but they’ll be left rueing the lack of support beyond the top three. Skipper Imran Ahmed, who will no doubt be disappointed with the lack of discipline in the field — an area Saint Albans must tighten up in the matches ahead. Despite the loss, St Albans 5XI showed resilience with strong top-order batting, and will look to bounce back in their next fixture.
