Match report The Women’s 1XI kicked off their T20 Cup journey on Sunday with an away trip to Harpenden. A cloudy, windy afternoon on The Common had players huddling for warmth, and the delayed 2pm start (thanks to a junior match that ran long) meant players on both sides were quietly united in one mission: get the game wrapped up in time to catch the Arsenal v West Ham kick off at 4.30pm!

Still, spirits were high, and the Saints arrived ready for their first taste of short format cricket this season. Captain Amy Price lost the toss, but Harpenden chose to bowl first, a decision that suited both teams perfectly. With the outfield slow, the wind swirling, and Harpenden fielders looking sharp from ball one, St Albans knew they’d need to graft for every run.

Annie O’Gorman dug in for a valuable 16 from 38, battling the conditions and the tight lines of Harpenden’s attack. Price followed with a brisk 25 from 27, including four boundaries, before a mix-up on the strip saw her unfortunately run out — one of several moments that had the Saints nervously checking their calling.

Then came a crucial, gritty passage of play from Caitlin Monteith, whose time at the crease was every bit as important as the runs she scored. Her eventual dismissal was one of the strangest moments of the afternoon: a top edge that ballooned behind the stumps, prompting the wicketkeeper to throw her gloves OFF to take the catch bare handed.

Harpenden’s bowlers were relentless. Grace Betteridge (3 13) and Amira Mackney (3 4) applied pressure from both ends, and with the outfield offering no favours, boundaries were rare and singles hard earned.

When Sally Cheeseman arrived at the crease, she brought exactly the energy the innings needed with loud, decisive calling, a push to lift the tempo, and a clear intent to take the game on. But with Harpenden’s bowlers continuing their tight lines, even Sally’s spark couldn’t quite ignite a late surge. The Saints finished on 80 9, a total that reflected the tough conditions and Harpenden’s disciplined bowling.

Defending a small total in T20 cricket is never easy, but St Albans came out with purpose. Evie Davis struck in the first over, thanks to a sharp catch from Kara Vijender, giving the Saints exactly the start they needed. For a moment, the mood shifted but Harpenden’s top order had other ideas.

Millie Dyer played a commanding innings, striking 52 from 42 balls with nine boundaries, and alongside Hannah Stobbs (20)*, the pair built a match winning partnership that resisted everything Captain Price threw at them. Price rotated the bowlers, mixed up the ends, and tried to disrupt the rhythm of the set batters but on a day when the wind seemed to carry every Harpenden shot into a gap, the Saints couldn’t quite find the breakthroughs they needed.

Harpenden reached the target in 10.4 overs, finishing on 66 2 to claim an 8 wicket win – and just in time for the 4.30pm KO! Onto next week, where we will face Bishop’s Stortford 2XI in the next Cup game.
