St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report St Albans Cricket Club 5XI welcomed league leaders Holtwhites-Trinibis CC 3rd XI on Saturday knowing they faced one of the strongest sides in the division. Despite a spirited effort with both bat and ball, St Albans were ultimately beaten by eight wickets after being bowled out for 138.

St Albans won the toss and were put into bat, and the home side found scoring difficult against an excellent Holtwhites bowling attack.

Opener Toby Crisp made a positive start, scoring 10 from 17 balls, before falling to Aishik Chatterji. Daiwik Khedekar then settled in and played a patient innings, top-scoring with 34 from 77 deliveries, including four boundaries. He provided valuable resistance while wickets fell at the other end.

St Albans struggled to build a substantial partnership, with Najib Khan making 7 and Mostufa Fazle Alahi dismissed without scoring. However, Md Altaf Husain produced another impressive contribution, scoring a quickfire 41 from just 36 balls. Altaf struck five fours and a six and briefly gave St Albans momentum, but his dismissal left the innings once again under pressure. There were useful contributions further down the order from Uvanesh Paramesh, who scored 15 from just 13 balls, while Nadeem Arif added 11. James Hallam, making a debut for the 5XI after stepping up from the U15s, scored 6. The St Albans innings eventually ended on 138 all out, with James Witty unbeaten on 0.

With 139 required for victory, Holtwhites began their chase confidently. St Albans made an early breakthrough when James Witty removed Tom Prime for 5, giving the home side some hope. The bowlers continued to work hard, with Vivek Deswal particularly economical, finishing with 1 maiden, 14 runs and no wicket from his five overs. Md Altaf Husain also bowled an excellent spell, conceding only 17 runs from his five overs.Captain Imran Ahmed bowled six overs for 29 runs, including a maiden, while Uvanesh Paramesh and Daiwik Khedekar also contributed with the ball. However, Holtwhites’ batting depth and quality eventually proved decisive.

Jack Hughes played a steady innings of 36 from 72 balls before being run out, while Arjun Popatanchored the chase with an unbeaten 59 from 87 deliveries, hitting 11 boundaries. Tyrone Reis then finished the game in emphatic fashion, smashing an unbeaten 32 from just 19 balls, including three fours and two sixes. Holtwhites-Trinibis reached 141-2 in 30.1 overs, completing an eight-wicket victory.

For St Albans, there were plenty of positives despite the result. The bowling unit kept the league leaders to a relatively controlled scoring rate for much of the chase, with Altaf and Deswal particularly economical. The team also gave another opportunity to James Hallam, continuing the club’s commitment to giving young players experience in men’s league cricket.
Holtwhites-Trinibis showed why they sit at the top of the league, combining a disciplined bowling performance with a composed run chase. St Albans will now look to take the positives from the performance and finish the season strongly.
