Bishop's Stortford CC Womens 2nd XI v St Albans Cricket Club Women's 1XI on Sun 17 May 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 10 runs
Match report
St Albans were involved in a hugely entertaining contest this week, eventually falling just 10 runs short in a match that went right down to the final over.
After Bishop’s Stortford won the toss and elected to bat, St Albans were sent out into the field on a very slopey outfield. The visitors’ opening partnership started strongly, taking advantage of risky quick singles to keep the scoreboard moving.
The first breakthrough came from Freya, who produced a superb bowled dismissal to break the opening stand. Shortly after, Anum beautifully dismissed the other opener with another bowled wicket in the 7th over, helping St Albans wrestle back some control.
There was also some excellent work behind the stumps from Arminah, who kept tidily throughout the innings and conceded only 4 byes. St Albans continued to apply pressure in the field, with Liv tightening things up close in and helping engineer a brilliant run out of the number 3 batter in the 10th over after yet another risky single. The fielding effort throughout was excellent with Jules also getting a run out.
Liv produced a tight spell that saw one ball rocketed high into the air, only for Annie to safely complete a brilliant catch. Liv finished her four overs with outstanding figures of just 1 wicket for 12 runs.
The innings ended in dramatic fashion thanks to Freya, who held her nerve in a very eventful final over. She picked up two textbook bowled wickets, while Jules added a superb run out to cap a strong bowling and fielding performance.
Bishop’s Stortford closed on 115 for 7.
After a quick tea break, Molly and Caitlin were sent out to open the batting for St Albans. Unfortunately, Molly was trapped LBW in the opening over against some very tight bowling from Bishop’s Stortford.
Annie joined Caitlin at the crease, with both batters looking to work the ball around sensibly while facing disciplined bowling. The pair kept the innings ticking along well, both eventually finishing on 13 runs apiece.
Caitlin, looking to increase the run rate, unfortunately picked out cover with one driven aerial shot, before the innings truly burst into life with the arrival of India.
India produced an absolute batting masterclass, confidently putting away both the good and bad balls while keeping the scoreboard moving at an impressive rate. Annie was unlucky to chop one back onto her stumps before Sally joined India in the middle.
Sally played an excellent supporting innings, strategically finding the gaps, hitting a few valuable boundaries of her own and running quick singles to keep the pressure on the fielding side. She too departed for 13 runs, bringing captain Arminah to the crease.
With victory still in sight, Arminah and India pushed hard with aggressive running between the wickets. India’s outstanding innings finally came to an end in the penultimate over when she was run out for a hugely respectable 45 from just 28 deliveries.
With 12 needed from the final over, the game was still alive. Unfortunately, Anum was stumped following a moment of hesitation over a quick single, but with wickets still in hand no one could fault the team for continuing to push for victory.
Despite a tremendous effort, St Albans ultimately fell short in a thrilling contest packed with positives, determination and some outstanding individual performances.
