St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Southgate Compton CC 1st XI on Sat 25 Jul 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
The 4th XI returned to Sandpit Lane looking to make it back-to-back wins for only the second time of the season. This week Southgate Compton were the visitors to the Sandpit Lane ground, with no less than two of their players quickly pointing out that Verulam School had provided no toilet paper - welcome to the home of cricket boys.
The Saturday started with it's usual shenanigans. Biceps Hingston the latest to be parachuted into the 3rd XI and Hugo Thomas called up from the adjoining astro pitch to replace him. Shortly after further disaster struck with Moksy Islam informing the skipper that he would arrive at 1.30 due to a family emergency.
As the toss loomed plans had been thrown out of the window and despite every sign showing that it was a batting day Davey was nervous, his batting line up having been decimated. As the coin went up in the air the Southgate captain called heads, tails appeared, the oppo skipper looked at Davey with trepidation and said "I know what that means," but was then left dumfounded as he was told, "we'll have a bowl".
With the 10 men of St Albans ready to go out to field an agreement was struck with the oppo that a sub fielder could be brought in until Moksy returned so cometh the hour, cometh the promised Man and Promise Jones, our very own miltary superman back on leave , became the 4s very own Gary Pratt for the day.
Opening the bowling were Husain and Davey, who both settled into their lines early. After a few lusty blows the first wicket came quickly, Altaf getting the aggressive opener playing on with a bit of extra pace. The second opener fell soon after to a brilliant run out at point from Suli Nisar, a direct hit that left the flailing batsmen significantly short of his ground. Husain would finish his spell with excellent figures of 6-3-10-1. At the other end Davey continued to probe, eventually finding the outside of the off stump with the ball of the day to dismiss what Claude AI had earlier described as "the key man".
The first change brought together Saunders and Paramesh, who immediately found their spot and kept up the pressure. Saunders was soon in the wickets, getting the number 3 batsmen for a watchful but scoreless duck. At this point pressure built and wickets startedc tumbling; a good catch from Thomas off the bowling of Saunders before an LBW and bowled completed an excellent 4fer for the slow assassin. Jug avoidance was to follow, as Saunders finished with figures of 8-3-11-4, not a bad day out. At the other end Paramesh performed equally as well, taking three wickets all for batsmen on zero runs, the first bowled before two catches to finish the innings. The Southgate Compton captain stranded, his team putting on only 67 runs in 29 overs - how's the decision to bowl first looking now son?
(For those curious as to the whereabouts of Moksy in all this, he eventuallly arrived at SLCG a couple of overs before the end of the Southgate innings meaning he touched the ball only twice in the field)
After a short break Crisp and Thomas opened the batting for the 4s, with the skippers words, "take responsibility, don't leave getting these runs to anyone but yourself" ringing in their ears.
The chase started well, Crisp immediately putting a loose ball to the boundary. Thomas joined him, but only after a heart in mouth moment where he was dropped by the keeper on his first ball. After this Thomas was belligerent, smashing multiple boundaries on his way to a quick fire 33. The back of the chase broken in the first 5 overs before Crispy decided the onlooking fans fancied some drama, BBQing Thomas for the only wicket to fall in the innings. Not to be outdone by the big hitting Thomas, he joined the party and himself began to dismiss the bad ball, adding multiple fours to his tally. The chase done in less than ten overs, one wicket down.
A brilliant performance from the 4s who comprehensively put Southgate Compton to the sword. The 4s season now improving, they finished this weekened 4th in the table with a sniff of promotion suddenly in their nostrils.
