St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Hitchin CC 4th XI on Sat 08 Aug 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report A stacked 4th XI returned to the SLCG to face high flying Hitchin in a game that would define the trajectory of the rest of the 4s season. Stacked with talented 3rd XI cricketers and a lengthy batting line up captain Davey made the unusual decision to bat first.

After Hitchin finished their warm up Roberts and Sinharoy strode to the pitch to open the 4s innings. Roberts smashed the first over for 10, before holing out and feeling he’d left a lot of runs on the pitch. Sinharoy found a similar fate, building his way to 20 including some lovely shots before also holing out. Nair joined the fray at 3 and proved to be the pick of the 4s batsmen, battling and grinding his way to a well made 49. He was unfortunate not to get to 50, chipping back a full toss to the bowler who made a good catch.

The rest of the batting innings was a tough watch, the remaining 8 batsmen contributing 29 runs between them and getting out to a raft of wild shots. The 4s all out for 118, significantly short of what both their talent deserved and what was needed to make a good game.

The bowling innings started in mixed fashion, at one end Telkman bowled incredibly well, pressuring the batsmen into mistakes and ending by far the pick of the bowlers taking 4 wickets for only 16. Davey was less effective, having opened with two maidens he then found himself struggling for consistency and was left wicketless. Saunders and Mayet were first change and both bowled tight spells, but wickets were needed and they were hard to find. The Hitchin batsmen knowing that such a small total gave them time to block out the good spells.

There was one champagne moment in the innings, Moksy finding an exceptional run out with only one stump to aim for.

Witty would find a couple of late innings wickets, and Winfield would bowl a tight 3 overs, but it was clear that the 4s had been let down by a batting innings which left about a hundred runs on the pitch. Woefully short given the team on display.

Sadly, the 4s season is now all but over.
