Radlett CC Under 12 B v St Albans Cricket Club Boys U12B on Thu 21 May 2026 at 18:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 20 runs
Match report
St Albans travelled to Radlett to celebrate the start of the warm weather for the bank holiday weekend, and nearly pulled off a heist against a strong Radlett side. Radlett won the toss and chose to field - regular St Albans opener Jay asked to be moved down the order so Aston and Reyaansh padded up and got ready to face the new ball. With the coach's wise words of doing the basics well, they set about blocking/leaving/missing the good balls, and trying to despatch anything too full or in their hitting zones. Aston profited from a couple of leg side deliveries, neatly tucking the ball away to the square leg boundary. A steady pace, with 12 added without a wicket falling in the first four overs. Harry and Thomas strode to the crease next, and Harry in particular looked to increase the run-rate; they batted very nicely together, again giving respect where it was due to good balls, and 'putting the rubbish in the bin' where appropriate. Some lovely running led to 26 being added to the total - 8 overs gone, and 38 on the board. Josh and Oscar came next, and St Albans reached the halfway stage with 46 in the runs column, and zero in the wickets lost sphere. A fantastic start! Oscar was finally the first wicket to fall in the 11th over, but after the pair were finished, St Albans had moved on to 58. Josh hit back to back to back fours, taking a particular liking to the bowling of Henry. Prakarsh and Iolo were St Albans' fourth pair, and they paired up beautifully, running well between the wickets and punishing bad balls. Another 19 added to the total and a very respectable score looked inevitable. Jay and Atticus were our final pair - Jay unluckily caught and bowled twice in three balls stemmed the runs momentarily, but the pair recovered well, and St Albans finished on 287.
Buoyed by a strong batting performance, the instruction at the changeover was to keep doing the basics well and we'd be in with a chance of picking up our second win of the season. Overall the fielding was tight (including a couple of excellent catches from Jay and Atticus), and Iolo kept superbly for the first ten. The bowlers tried their very best, occasionally let down by not quite hitting the right length. Atticus and Jay teamed up for a bowling partnership that actually cost Radlett 4 runs in their four over spell. At the halfway stage, Radlett had 40 on the board...advantage St Albans? Overs 11 and 12 went for a combined 18 runs, and Radlett were suddenly back on track, needing 30 from 8 overs. Josh and Oscar bowled as the fourth pair, and each took a wicket; both finding just enough swing to beat the bat and tickle the off stumps. The equation was that Radlett had 4 overs to score 15. In walked Radlett's superstar batsman Jesse - he and Nik plundered 28 from overs 17 and 18, meaning only wickets could win it for St Albans. A couple of wickets did fall (including a runout at the end of the 19th over as a result of confusion around whether the ball was dead or not - it very much wasn't!), but it wasn't enough to save St Albans in the end. Radlett pulled ahead for the final time, ending on 307 and winning by 20 runs. St Albans will be pleased to have taken seven wickets, and keeping the outcome in the balance for such a long period of the match,
One interesting stat from the match - St Albans' total included 27 runs from extras. Radlett's total included 47 runs from extras. The difference between the scores of the sides when the bails were removed for stumps? 20 runs...
