St Albans Cricket Club Girls U15B v Redbourn CC Under 15 B Girls on Mon 15 Jun 2026 at 18:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report It had been a while; the last time the girls played cricket, Ben Stokes was getting to bed at a sensible hour, Count Binface had no idea where Makerfield was and a bloated 2026 World Cup was a distant threat rather than a tiring reality. Nothing had changed at Sandpit Lane, however, where the cold wind blew and the clouds smothered any notion of summer.

Redbourn kindly agreed to lend St Albans three fielders (the girls were three players short) and permit the three lowest-scoring batters to have a second dig once Redbourn had taken five wickets. Redbourn lost the toss and captain Freya chose to field first.

Freya and Leila opened the bowling and the first wicket didn’t take long. In the second over, and with Leila bowling, a dicey run was called following a shot to mid-on, Freya pounced on the ball and threw down the stumps at the non-striker’s end. A great start for St Albans and with Elaina forcing a run out in her first over too, Redbourn were 33-2 after six overs. Redbourn’s surviving opener had other ideas and, despite the bowler-pleasing long grass in the outfield, struck 4 fours in little more than an over to retire on 30 with the Redbourn innings not even at the halfway stage.

Elaina replaced Lauren as keeper on 10 overs and with the score on 63-2, Freya brought herself on and immediately snaffled a wicket. The batter sent the ball miles upwards and Elaina took a good catch, side-shuffling to second slip with her head skywards. Surprising really, considering she exclaimed at least twice “I can’t see the ball!”.

The runs kept coming, and with another of the Redbourn batters heading for a retirement, Lauren came on to flummox the batters, bowling her left-arm, inswinging rockets. After four overs, she had taken two wickets, both bowled, and was the main reason for pulling back the scoring rate. Redbourn finished on 139-5.

In reply Freya and Elaina made a steady start but, in a similar fashion to the Redbourn innings, Elaina was dismissed early trying to scamper a quick single that wasn’t really on. The look she gave Freya was colder than the force 6 wind blowing through the umpire’s not-enough-layers at square leg. Leila’s dismissal soon after brought our very own hurricane, Lauren, to the crease. Despite seemingly having shoelaces coated in Teflon which needed to be re-tied every other over (her coach promised to buy new laces for her birthday), she ran hard between the wickets and put the fielders on the back foot, smashing the ball back over the bowlers’ head a number of times. The long grass in the outfield, sadly, reducing the value of her shots.

With Freya out bowled, chopping on to her stumps, Lauren worked well with Maya and Charlotte to keep the run rate ticking over and put pressure on the fielders. Redbourn’s bowling got better and Lauren was bowled for 22, trying to catch up with the run rate – a fantastic knock. Maya and Leila returned to the crease for a second bat, and scored some valuable late runs finishing on 10* and 4* respectively. St Albans lost by 5 wickets, 28 runs short of their target. A valiant effort considering the girls hadn’t played for a month and the team were short of players.

Player of the match as voted for by the opposition: Lauren.
