St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Dunstable II on Sun 23 Apr 2017 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won by one wicket

Match report A great pre-season friendly match , which ended in a tense 1 wicket win for St Albans, was only marred by a dressing room break in at Clarence Park , which saw several players lose car keys, wallets and 'phones. A warning to be more vigilant this season during matches .

To the game though - St Albans lost the toss and bowled . The opening bowlers for Saints , Jim Everdell and Christian Hay, both put in tight spells with Everdell taking the early wickets of both Dunstable's opening batsmen Horton and Rumball. Debutantes Punit Satsangi and Altaf Husain then followed up with decent spells , Satsangi bowling Trehane with a corker. Skipper Andy Saunders came on and trapped the dangerous looking Ahmed LBW as both he and Naveed Ahmed slowed the run rate significantly . Leg spinner Stuart Murray proved awkward for the batsmen and got his reward by taking the wicket of Lewis who was scoring freely. A decent bowling performance then only slightly overshadowed by some distinctly average fielding displays , which saw too many misfields and dropped catches for players of this calibre.

Credit though to Syed Kibria for his excellent wicket keeping - he stood up impressively to all the bowlers and was his usual athletic (and chirpy) self behind the stumps .

Saints were set a target of 191 to win and were confident of chasing that total down with significant depth in their batting line up ....

Naveed Ahmed and Stuart Murray opened the batting for Saints but 2nd ball Ahmed hammered a short delivery into the covers where it was somehow held onto by a disbelieving fielder. One down then and in came debutante Phool Abbas , a classy stroke maker. Murray at the other end was bashing the ball to all corners and ended up on an excellent 66 . After starting to accumulate runs Abbas had a rush of blood to the head and was caught off a skier .Ed Lowe started confidently before trying a cut shot to the wrong delivery from the impressive slow left armer Lewis. Syed Kibria played some nice shots before he too hit one in the air as did Hugo Thomas . After this Jim Everdell came to the crease and played in his usual entertaining way scoring a quickfire 11 before getting bowled . Punit Sansangi batted really well ending his debut knock 37 not out . Altaf Husain also showed promise before being caught on 12 .

With just six runs needed for the win Christian Hay came out and was quickly back in the pavilion after a duck leaving Andy Saunders and Punit Sansangi to steer Saints home to victory by one wicket.

Mention must go to Saints own Hassan Salahin who filled in for the opposition when they turned up with only 10 men, bowling a tidy 8 over spell and taking a wicket.

A really good, competitive pre-season friendly then played in good spirit by the kind of opposition it's a pleasure to play against on a Sunday .

Just a shame that some thieving toe-rags had to spoil what was a enjoyable day.
