St Albans Cricket Club 5XI v Northwood Town on Sat 02 Sep 2017 at 12:30
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report St Albans Club XI entertained Northwood Town 4XI on a sunny day at Sandpit Lane, with both teams fielding six under-15s. A time game was agreed, with 20 overs to be bowled after 5pm.

Saints lost the toss and were put into bat. Openers Knill-Jones and Mulvaney made a steady start, despite the slow outfield making boundaries hard to come by. The fifty partnership came up in the 12th over, but after Mulvaney departed for 14, a rush of wickets followed as Patel (1), Kanchwala (4) and Kheriwala (1) were all out caught and Knill-Jones was adjudged LBW for 25. Lawrence and Mistry steadied the ship, taking Saints past 100 before the latter was bowled for 7. Lawrence continued to accumulate runs but was eventually stumped for 25, with the score on 115. This brought Coulson and Ferguson together and they set about Northwood's bowlers, scoring a flurry of boundaries and collecting 68 runs in just 9 overs, with Saints declaring on 183-7 at the end of the 41st over.

Northwood's innings started slowly as Saints openers Ferguson (0-9) and Kheriwala (0-26) bowled some threatening lines but both ultimately went unrewarded. Patel (0-24) and Kumar (0-30) initially continued to restrict the scoring, but with wickets still not forthcoming, Saints opened up the field in an effort to induce some more attacking shots. A change of bowling straight after the drinks break finally saw a breakthrough, with Mistry picking up 4 wickets in four overs in a fiery spell. Mulvaney looked threatening at the other end once he found his line and length, picking up a wicket with a couple of other difficult chances just failing to go to hand. With Northwood now ahead of the required run rate but with 5 wickets down, the game hung in the balance. A needless run out gifted Saints a sixth wicket but despite Webber picking up two wickets in two balls in the 38th over, Northwood reached their target in the 39th over with 17 balls remaining.

Overall, it was a closely contested match between two very evenly matched teams, with the 57 extras conceded by Saints in the field probably the difference between victory and defeat.
