Harpenden IV v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 22 Jun 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 52 runs
Match report
A fine 52 run win over local rivals Harpenden saw the 3XI make it back to back victories and 4 wins out of their last 5 as they keep very much in touch with the leaders in Division 8A.
St George’s School was looking splendid in the gratefully received sunshine - such a welcome sight after the relentless rain of recent weeks - and a green tinged , slightly damp pitch looked like a ‘bowl first’ strip . Unfortunately, stand-in skipper Andy Saunders lost the toss and Saints were put into bat .
Things started less than perfectly when both openers , Steve Ferguson and Charlie Parkinson, fell victim to some sharp bowling on a wicket demonstrating variable bounce from the off. However, Harry ‘HJK’ Knill-Jones in his first Saints outing of the season and Dave ‘Herbie’ Hancock steadied the ship and built a promising partnership that saw the scoreboard starting to tick over well.
With HJK’s classical approach aligned to Herbies hard hitting style the pair put on 55 before Herbie holed out on the boundary on 25. HJK continued to accumulate and with Moksy Islam (20) in support he reached a deserved half century before being caught soon after on 51.
Zach West came to the crease and continued the good work , accelerating the run rate and with Tim Winfield and Tom Wilton joining him during his stint , made 41* taking the final total to an impressive looking 195-6 off 45 overs at tea.
Medium pacers Jamie Telkman and Tim Winfield were handed the new ball but despite their tight lines saw the opening batsmen nick and edge their way, helped by some generous fielding at times, to a fast start . They soon pulled it back , however, and the run rate started to slow as the field settings were adjusted, the Saints fielders upped their game and the ball became harder to get away.
Jamie’s excellent figures of (7-1-0-22) don’t do enough justice to his controlled spell while Tim’s removal of the dangerous opener, after an opening partnership of 52 ,with a sharp caught and bowled were just reward for his work.
First change saw Zach West and Adam Murphy take over the bowling duties and both did excellent work starving the batsmen of run making opportunities and slowing the rate to a trickle . When the other opener fell to ‘Murphdog’ the score was 93-2 after 27 overs and the game was very much still alive with 102 runs needed off 18 overs and 8 wickets in hand.
Skipper for the day Saunders bought himself on in a dual right arm/left arm slow bowling offensive with Murphdog. Things started with a bang with two further wickets falling in Saunders first two overs and with Murphy picking up another the score had suddenly gone from 93-2 to 96-5.
With batsmen now compelled to force the pace chances started to come and the two slow bowlers were able to steadily pick up wickets with Murphdog finishing on 9-0-3-35 and Saunders ending with his best Saints figures of 7.2-2-6-26 .
A mention in despatches too for HJK who bowled two tight overs at the death to restrict the chase to 138 runs and see Saints home to an impressive win and bragging rights over their neighbours.
